The Cibao International Airport, which is also known as Santiago Airport, is situated in Santiago de los Caballeros. This is the Dominican Republic's second-largest city and the airport is the third busiest, serving around one million passengers each year. It has over 30 daily flights to Santiago from the US, Central America and the Caribbean, so finding cheap flights to Santiago, DR is possible. As it is not a very large or well-developed airport, the facilities are fairly basic. Transportation options from the airport are limited, but there are taxis and some buses available to take you to your hotel after your Santiago flight.
There are several different bus services, including Metro Bus and Metro Pack, that can take you around the area and to other nearby cities. Taxis tend to be fairly expensive apart from the ""Carros Publicos"" or ""conchos."" These are shared taxis that travel along fixed routes and are probably the most efficient and cost-effective means of getting around Santiago. After your Santiago flights have landed, you can always relax by taking a trip around the city in a coach pulled by horses. You can find these at the Monument. For the more adventurous, there are also ""motoconhos"" available as well, which are motorcycle taxis.
The ""Monumento Santiago,"" also known as the ""Monumento a los Heroes de la Restauracion," is probably the most popular tourist attraction in Santiago. Located on top of the highest hill in the city, there are 151 steps to climb on the spiral staircase. Although not right at the top of the monument, an observation deck provides a stunning view of the city. At each level of the stairs there are paintings of scenes depicting the revolution. The cathedral ""Catedral de Santiago Apostol"" has many beautiful stained-glass windows. Inside the building there are tombs of some well-known Dominican heroes.
There are three large shopping centers in Santiago: The Plaza Internacional, which has well-known brand names such as Benetton, the Bella Terra Mall, which is the newest mall and has an Apple store, and the Colinas Mall, which has lots of clothing stores. If you want a cheaper souvenir from your trip, then the Calle de Sol in the city center is a good shop to visit. Most of the nightlife in Santiago is concentrated in the area around the Monument. Camp David Ranch is a great restaurant with a good view of the city, and it has delicious dishes such as the lobster al coco. However you spend your vacation, you will find that your airfare to Santiago was money well spent.
