Flights to Langkawi arrive at Langkawi International Airport in Padang, Matsirat. The island itself is a duty-free zone, so there is only a small duty-free selection in the airport. There are a few ATMs and public telephones, and passengers arriving on Langkawi flights with extra baggage will be grateful for the complimentary luggage trolleys available. While there is not a huge list of airlines that fly to this airport, you can still find cheap flights to Langkawi through a budget airline or by booking a vacation package through a travel agent.
There are taxis available at the airport to take you to your lodgings. You simply go to the taxi desk in the airport and purchase a coupon. If you prefer to rent a car, it is best to book one when you arrange your airfare to Langkawi because you will get a better vehicle if you reserve one in advance rather than wait until you arrive. This is one of the recommended travel modes since there is not a lot of public transit in Langkawi. You can rent motorbikes and scooters as well. You should obtain your rental vehicles from real agencies rather than the street taxi drivers, who usually operate without legal licensing or appropriate insurance.
Many visitors love the Seven Wells waterfall, named for the seven bathing pools that line its path. You can view the grand waterfall from platforms or bathe in the legendary pools where fairies supposedly frolicked in ancient times. Some fun local attractions are the Underwater World, which is an indoor aquarium, and Crocodile Adventureland where visitors can watch men wrestle crocodiles and ride crocodile-drawn rickshaws. There are also countless tours and excursions you can arrange as well as helicopter and cable-car rides. If you are more into the flora, you can visit the Laman Padi Rice Garden or the Legend Garden. The Oriental village offers Asian-themed entertainment and foods.
The island offers a lot of bargain shopping, so you should resist buying items at the airport when you land. Go to Kuah town for chocolates, batik items, and tobacco. You can find these items and more at The Zon Duty-Free Shopping Complex as well. There are a lot of good seafood restaurants on Langkawi, but watch out for the overpriced establishments that target tourists. You can find many fine places to eat on the resorts too. Since Langkawi is tax-free, the liquor is really cheap, even compared to rest of Malaysia. There are plenty of bars and nightclubs, especially in the resort areas.
