Getting Around Santiago

The public transportation system in and around Santiago is relatively sophisticated and inexpensive. There are traditional buses as well as La Micro, which is a system of microbuses called Transantiago. To use La Micro you will need to purchase a smart travel card called the BIP and charge it with money. You can also take advantage of the Metro, a railway system that travels around the city, or the Colectivo which is a cross between a microbus and a taxi and just as inexpensive as the buses.
