San Pedro, Belize, is a former fishing village but is now renowned for being a picturesque vacation spot. Getting there, however, is a little more difficult than some other vacation spots as there is only a municipal airport. Cheap flights to San Pedro actually begin with a flight to Belize City and from there San Pedro flights are taken into the small municipal airport. Many packages offered by hotels in San Pedro will include coverage of the last leg of your journey.
Driving isn't really an option in San Pedro as there are not very many vehicles in this town and no private car rental companies to speak of. Most people walk from place to place, but there are some taxis available. If you prefer not to walk you can also rent a golf cart or bicycle to traverse the beach town. Water taxis are available which will take you to any resort that is located offshore.
Just because there is minimal driving in this beach town doesn't mean your flights to San Pedro will be without adventure and excitement. There is plenty to do and to see. First and foremost is Ambergris Caye. There you can swim, dive, or just soak up the sun. Diving is also available at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. If you are looking for some relaxation there are no less than five spas to unwind and be pampered. While you may be on vacation, you can still keep up your physique by exercising at the San Pedro Fitness Club. Likely you will want to spend a good amount of time hanging out on the beach, so make sure you bring your swimming gear.
You saved money on your airfare to San Pedro and you'll continue to save because shopping isn't a main activity here. You'll find the odd shop and the open market but this is no town for shopaholics. Dining, however, is a different story. There are a number of restaurants with varied cuisines. Lola's Pub, despite the name, offers Vietnamese cuisine. The Aji Tapas Bar and Restaurant offers Mediterranean, Spanish, and vegetarian food. The best breakfast is at Mathieus Delicatessan. And if you want real Central American fare, try the aptly named Hidden Treasure. Finally, the bar scene offers Crazy Canucks Beach Bar or Hideaways.
