Arriving in Port-of-Spain

After your flight to Port-of-Spain has landed you will immediately feel the warmth of the islands at the Piarco International Airport. Visitors need a valid passport, and a visa is required for citizens of some countries. A TT$ 100.00 departure tax is required of everyone departing on Port-of-Spain flights, payable in either local TT currency or USD. At the airport a special ATM machine is installed where the departure tax may be paid.

Getting Around Port-of-Spain

Several viable transportation options make travel within the city and between Trinidad and Tobago easy and fun. Travelers who are not in any hurry may enjoy the interisland ferry. Choices for travel on either island include cab, rental car, bus, moped, or bicycle. Bus travel is inexpensive and a great way to experience the local culture. Mountain bikes are popular with nature enthusiasts, and trails around the island accommodate a number of skill levels. However after a long and tiring flight to Trinidad, a taxicab is a good way of getting to Port-of Spain.

Main Attractions in Port-of-Spain

Located on the outskirts of Port-of-Spain is the most popular tourist destination, the Caroni Bird Sanctuary. It is the nesting ground of the national bird, the Scarlet Ibis. The La Brea Pitch Lake, the largest natural pitch lake in the world, is worth a trip to experience this natural wonder. A trip to Fort George provides stunning views of the city. Learn about history at the restored Signal House, the Lockup, and view the original 1804 cannons. Visit the Queen’s Park Savannah, one of the oldest recreational parks in the Caribbean and the largest roundabout in the world. Enjoy a snow cone or thirst-quenching coconut water while watching a cricket game or a soccer match.
