Arriving San Juan

There are increasing opportunities to purchase cheap flights to San Juan in Puerto Rico; the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is approximately 9 miles Southeast of the city. There are regular shuttle buses that run every 30 minutes at a very reasonable price and the B-40 public bus also is an excellent transfer option. Once flights to San Juan have landed there are several rent-a-car outlets at the airport which also offer a general information service. Taxis and limos also are readily available, although the cost is a little steep.

Getting Around San Juan

Due to its location near the harbor, the old city of San Juan has the ferry option of transportation, in addition to the usual bus and taxi alternatives. The bus stops are marked 'Parada' and the numbers B-21, and A-5 are the ones to look for when sightseeing. Driving can prove difficult, so the rented car might not be advisable due to extremely limited parking around the city. San Juan flights also link with the city's rapid transit system called 'Tren Urbano'; but this surprisingly doesn't service downtown, so is only really applicable if you are looking to explore the outskirts.

Main Attractions in San Juan

There is a lot of history in the city, which can be seen in the El Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the 16th century citadel, and the El Castillo de San Cristobal, the ancient fort. Ateneo de Puerto Rico and La Princesa are museums packed with fascinating items, both right in downtown. Of course being a port means that there are beaches very close by, with those at Condado and Isla Verde probably the best to visit. Central Park is the main public open space, although there are several others that present a pleasant alternative.

Shopping, Dining, and Nightlife in San Juan

With the airfare to San Juan often proving very reasonable, there is plenty of great shops and restaurants to spend what has been saved. The largest mall is the Plaza Las Americas with terrific bargains to be had; Cristo and San Francisco Streets are also littered with an array of shops. Eating is especially varied with a host of outstanding establishments to choose from. El Alcazor is famous for its seafood, Al Dente is possibly the leading Italian eatery, and Margaritas serve superb Mexican cuisine. The nightlife is varied too; dancing plays a huge part in the culture. Dakita is a great pub over 2 floors and Shannon's is the typical Irish venue; both are regularly full of punters. The Rumba Club is worth a visit, it was the setting for the crowd scenes in the block buster movie “Dirty Dancing”.
