Is it safe to walk alone during the day to the shopping area?
There are not many options for shopping in downtown Jacksonville. The only mini mall Downtown Jax is the Jax Landing and you do not want to go there. You would be better off staying somewhere in the St. Johns Town Center Area if you would like to do some shopping. At the town center you will have access to every store you could possibly imagine. There are plenty of hotels around St. Johns Town Center, the Sheraton is a very nice place and is comparable to the Omni.
The "Landings" shopping center is like a ghost town, with a few remaining stores and about 3 restaurants (didn't like the food at the Irish Pub). There is a lovely riverwalk that runs behind the theater (across street from Omni) and continues past Hooters and the Irish Pub. It has great views of the Intercoastal and offers benches along the way. Eventhough we did see a few homeless people, the area seemed safe.
I honestly don't know... I was there on business and could not escape but there dos not look like much was around...
Walking around during the day is perfectly safe but there really is no shopping. For lunch, you could walk to Candy Apple (Sweet Pete's), Cafe Nola or Superfood and Brew.
My husband and I walked around during the day and at night and we didn't feel unsafe at all. If the shopping area you're referring to happens to be Jacksonville Landing, don't waste your time. That place is dead! There's a few restaurants that are still operating but that place is just a ghost town. It's still nice to walk by the water and see the bridges, but don't expect to shop.
