Know any good tours to take with a very knowledgeable 10 yr. old? Usually they all are the same,,,hopefully you will help me keep him motivated, and excited.
There are many ways to see the battlefield including segways, buses and horseback. Renting your own Licensed battlefield guide is a perfect way to have a personal tour....you can share your interests and he/she will tailor the tour for you! If you 10 year old is Tech Savvy, they now have Ipad tours....similar to the auto CD's but you get an Ipad with the tour on it and do your own thing. There is also a company called "American Stories" that have some unique experiences...one called "enlist Now" where they treat you like a soldier that has just enlisted and go through some basic skills. Here is a description:
Other tours and programs:
"Enlist NOW!" interactive soldier program allows kids and kids at heart to step back in time and become a Union Soldier. You'll drill, learn to load & fire the black powder rifle. You'll see up close what the average soldier carried and learn how he spent his time in between battles. Available to groups. Civil War Fact or Fiction Tour and try to figure out which of the bizarre Civil War trivia stories are true. Score cards & prizes are provided
I'm not sure how that works with individuals.
There are also Ranger Programs which are free programs offered by the National Park service and cover a variety of topics including battlefield hikes and Jr. Ranger programs just for kids. In addition, there are Jr. Secret service programs at the Eisenhower farm.
There is a wealth of information on the National Park Service or Destination Gettysburg Websites. This site will not let me post the actual web addresses.
or you can call me here at the hotel 717 334-6715. See you in July!

We didn't take any tours. We were there for the graduation from Gettysburg College only.
Linda, I think the best way to tour the battlefields is to buy the CD set at the museum store (or some downtown shops have them, like the Dobbin House gift shop). You then use your own vehicle and starting at the Visitor's Center, the CD's take you step by step to all the sights starting with day 1 of the first battle. You can stop the CD, get out of your car, wander around at your leisure. We did this 4 times in our 2 days at Gettysburg and I feel like we saw so much more than a bus tour, horseback or Segway tour. Some of the roads are one way and too narrow for a bus so I think you miss a lot of the best sights, like Devil's Den. Good luck and have fun.
The bus tour from the museum center for the hospital station during the war was very good. the guide who did presentation would definitely keep a 10 year old very interested. this is in addition to the bus tour which was also great!
There are a few family friendly ghost tours around.
Do a google search for ghost tours gettysburg. I recommend gettysburg paranormal investigations
We did a tour with them and enjoyed it so much we are planning to make another trip to do another
I would go to the Visitors Center and see the museum. It's a little pricey I think but there is so much to see there. The Eisenhower Farm is wonderful as well. It's interesting to see how simply they lived when they spent time in Gettysburg. On the farm tour you can stay as long as you want and walk all over the grounds.
