Zanzibar Spice Tour Questions & Answers

Sydney, Australia

We are staying at Breezes Resort on the east coast. Looking at its location it looks somewhat remote (no real town there). Given this, should I be booking any tours through my hotel. The prices seem really high ( spice tour $59US per person, dolphin and jozani $73 US per person) or do you think I could get cheaper rates by accessing non hotel based tour companies. Thanks Helen

Hi Helen, the market is very flexible there. make sure you are bargaining for the price and get is at least 20-30% below the initial proposal.

We have booked a package foe 3-4 different places and we made the price drop easily.

Locals offer very good transfers and their cars are equipped with A/C. Ask for good local music as well.

A good advice is to buy local prepaid SIM card so you get info in your hands as the roaming may cost you a fortune.

Hello, the prices which your hotel is offering is indeed very expensive. I think you will find better offers from locals. We paid for Jozani 30 dollars for 2 persons including transportation from and to the resort.

Hi Helen, I believe this is expensive unless it includes your transport, however, it is still too much, u have to bargain a lot, specially if u r a family with kids, kids get 50% off.

Contact Suraka from Salam Travel and ask him for best rate +255 776 848 311

Also try Amo Zanzibar, call Noreen +255 774 590 020 or look up their email, they were also v good, but always negotiate the price.

Good luck and enjoy

Thank you everyone for your insights. Do you all think its appopriate to bargain the prices with the hotel staff who I am potentially booking with or is this considered inappropriate and a fixed price.

The person fs30 from Durban, I am interested that you do consider the prices I listed to be way over priced (which I think they are also considering the US to Aussie dollar conversion) and noted your recommendation for the fellow Hatib. Can you give me an idea about where you went with this driver/guide (from where to where) and his charge and did he just drop you at places or did he walk around and explain things. Thanks again

For the sake of saving $10 I would suggest you stick with the deal your hotel is proposing, probably better organised. It is such a beautiful country but also rather poor so they depend on tourists. Always barter for prices!

Your location is lovely but you're right about the lack of town. I suggest 3-4 days at this location at most - depending on your own desire for content of your stay. It will be cheaper to plan to do your Jozani trip as you're coming to Breezes from Stone town. The stop will be around one hour only and you'll pass by Jozani on your way east anyway. A couple of days (1-2 nights) staying in Stone town will be cheaper at this time of the year than going back and forth by taxi. The ride from Stone town to Breezes will be app 1hour 15mins each way. Expect to pay about 40.000tsh for a taxi each way. Prices are in general up for barging.

Enjoy your stay.

I suggest that you book through your hotel. The fee actually goes to the driver, who then arranges for the details of the trip. If the hotel residents are not happy, the hotel will no longer use them, so the drivers know that they must treat you well. You might look into adding another location to your outing. That will lower your cost for the combined sites.

Hi Helen

Having just visited Zanzibar's east coast, I would recommend that you do not book any tours through your hotel. They are way over priced. I highly recommend a very professional, informative guide whose name is Hatib. His local number is +255 773 258 281.

Contact him for quotes. He is very reasonable and knows of great places.

Thanks

Hi Helen,

Thinking back now, the cost for my tours were also on the high side - at least compared to what you've quoted. I think it's safer and easier to book with your hotel. You will be picked up and dropped off at your hotel should you book from them and I doubt there is any other way to go on these tours.

Hope this helped.
