The PortsWood Questions & Answers

Bristol, United Kingdom

I visited Cape Town a couple of years ago and spent a lot of the time at the V & A day and night and loved it. I always felt safe whoever I went but locals said I should always get a taxi after dark which I did but I want to now stay nearer the waterfront so I don't need to do this. Is the area gated so I can walk safely from hotel to V & A at night. Many thanks.

No the area is not gated. We walked frequently to and from V and A wharf without fear. We were always in a group of 4. But it felt very safe.

We stayed at the Portswood last September, we walked day and night to and from the V & A. Felt completely safe at all times and there were many other people around doing the same thing. I would have no hesitation staying again and recommending it.

It is basically right across street from V & A waterfront. You walk up the stairs of a parking garage which had a security guard when we were there to the hotel. We were out each night and plenty of people out and never felt frightened on walk from V& A to hotel. Always check with your concierge upon arrival.

The Portswood is not in a gated area but because it is only a couple minutes walk to the waterfront I felt perfectly safe coming and going at night. You will see security outside the hotel as well as along the way to the V & A shops and restaurants. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings and the many pedestrians there, it is a great location.

Hi. No the area is not gated but I felt very safe as the walking distance is only a few meters. You also walk past a well lit underground parking exit which helps.

The Portswood is across the road from shops and restaurants. This area is not gated but we walked day and night and felt completely safe. Lots of people around. Even had our clothes laundered in the arcade leading from hotel to the roadway, which you cross to get to the waterfront. Great area!

Hello THe Portwood is not gated but security is very prominent. I would not feel confident walking on my own in most places throughout the world and Africa is no different.

I stayed at the Portswood Hotel in August last year. While the area is not gated, the distance from the waterfront where all the restaurants are and the hotel is only about 5 minutes walk. I felt completely safe walking from the hotel and back at any time of the day or night as there is always lots of people around. Having said that, the latest I was walking back to the hotel would have been around midnight, so can't comment on how safe it would be if you were walking back at say 4 in the morning.

Hope this helps.

It is not gated but it is literally just a few minutes walk from the hotel to the waterfront, on roads that were very busy during the day but not so much at night. We were two ladies on our own but did not feel worried at all about the walk back to the hotel.

The Portswood is right in the middle of the Waterfront area. So you will have no security issues. We have always felt perfectly safe there. The Hotel also has valet parking.
