North Island: If you plan to start in Bay of Islands, take the shuttle flight (50 minutes) instead of van transfer (4-5 hours). I stayed in Paihia. Take tour to Cape Reinga (full day). Visit Russell & Kauri Puketi forest. I hired a local taxi for the forest & drive local area through the information center Paihia. You can book the Cape on line. Be sure to visit the Waitangi Treaty Estate. Auckland: Maritime Museum, lots of restaurants around the area. Going South: Waimangu Volcanic Valley, Hobbiton Movie set, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier & stay in Hokitika. lots of Art shops. Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point. Tour around Christchurch. Wellington: Cable car to the top & walk back through the gardens. Don’t miss the history at the Roxi theatre and National Museum. The Anzac wing is amazing. The whole museum is very well done with lots for everyone in the family. Hope you have a good trip

2 weeks and two islands is a lot to cover. You need to be selective on what and where you go, especially with kids in tow. We elected not to do the Bay of Islands and started in Auckland. The maritime Murseum was great and pay for the hour long harbour sail. It was worth it. There are some great on/off bus tours of Auckland. I would choose those. There are additional fees for the attractions. Rotoarau is a must see. Same with Hobbiton - if you a fan of Lord if the Rings. There is a great tour of Rotarau that takes you to a wild life preserve the thermal gizsors and a sheep farm. Also in Rotarau there is a Maori tribe that offers dinner and some really great interpreter lead activities. We also enjoyed the watomo glow worm caves. We did not get to the west coast of the north island. Too much for us.

South Island I would focus on Milford Sound Frank Joseph Glacier, Queenstown and Dunedin. We

missed Tasman national park- and I wish we had more time. Lots to see and do. I would also recommend hitting Omarau if you are into Steam Punk. Awesome sights for the kids. Don’t miss the playgrounds in Wellington Omarau and Christchurch (Maragert Mayhe right downtown). Kiwis do the most amazing playgrounds! Give yourself time in the drive it takes a lot longer than you think. There are lots of pull outs to see

Some amazing sites.

If you are not married to seeing both islands perhaps consider just one island. There is alit to see and don in just one!!!

We planned all our day trips on our own but on the last day, we found Kiwi Day Tours owned and operated by a gentleman named Clay (Sorry I can't remember his last name) who took us on an all day tour of Mount Maunganui and Karanghake Gorge (Old abandoned gold mine). We only wish we had found Clay on day 1. He was a wealth of knowledge very reasonably prices. You can reach him at his company, Kiwi Day Tours or phone 0275454329.

He will definitely show you the most interesting sites but if you're a Lord of the Rings fan, don't miss out on the N. Island Hobbiton tour and the S. Island Movie Set Tour w/the Weta props studio.

There are just so many things to see and do there! Definitely see the museum in Auckland. The Maori exhibit and presentation along with a walk through the geothermal area in Tauranga.

There's plenty of stuff we didn't do. So, you won't be bored but do get in touch with Clay. He will be a big help in utilizing your time.
