Best way to get from hotel to city center using public transportation? I know there's a free shuttle but it doesn't run on weekend.

Having looked for the answer to this question with no certain response i feel i should provide a comprehensive reply so future travellers can make an informed decision. I am staying ay the hotel now - its late saturday evening and ive just returned using public transport. I am glad i chose to stay here notwithstanding my issues with transport.

1) there is public transport on all days and its frequent

2) takes about 30 mins all in all

There are a few ways to get from city to hotel and vice versa. my "friend" was google maps - extremely useful and my preferred route was this:

From the city - The U1 has a couple of useful stops centrally for tourists (karlplatz near opera house, stefanplatz for the cathedral), also the haptbahnhoff. Take U1 heading reumannplatz (or change to U1 where you can) -it stops at troststrasse and reumannplatz. The 65a stops near (within say 74 metres of the exit) both these stations heading to Wienerberg city (i dont think you can go wrong with the bus as it seems to be on a loop). Stay on the bus to the end of the line (wienerberg city). you will have passed the garden inn before it stops so you will know the direction to walk. its less than 100m and you cant miss it.

the 65a goes on a loop (from reumannplatz to wienberg city) so the bus stop you get off is the one you will get on for your return journey. in the U station follow the signs for 65a straight off the train to exit the station. if struggling the first time check google maps... the likelihood is you will see the bus and its number anyway. The troststrasse (U) stop off the bus to the city from the hotel and onto U 1 was an easier journey going into city from hotel because i followed everyone who was heading in the same direction. ive done the trip a few times now and its 30 mins max with a bus/train coming within 5 minutes. AND its a weekend. there are loads of alternatives which involve more of a walk.

long winded. sorry but hope it clarifies

1 min walk from hotel to 65A bus stop (left out of front door, and right, at corner). Catch bus to Reumannplatz (11 stops, 13 minutes). Walk 5 min to Ubahn station. Catch U1 train in direction of Leopoldau (5 stops, 8 minutes) to Strphansplatz - St Stephens Dome (Church/Cathedral), which is just about in the centre of all the Tourist area. On return, catch U1 train in direction of Oberlaa, get off at Reumannplatz, catch 65A back to hotel.

Tickets can be bought in the Tarbuck store, in the business centre, opposite hotel - you can not pay on the bus and need a ticket before you ride.

Be sure to validate your ticket on the first vehicle (bus, train or tram) which you get on. Ticket inspectors do check, and are strict.

Tickets cost €2.40 per person, each way/single journey - and are good for bus and train. If over 63 years of age, it only costs €1.5 per person, each way. Also available is an €8.5 ticket for 24 hours unlimited travel.

You can take bus 65A and then take a tram U1 to the centre. It was my way :) and one more opportunity just walk couples quartiers and you'll reach tram stop Windtensrabe 1 which going to the centre.
