Old Town Questions & Answers

Hi. Is Hallstatt a place to go to if the weather is bad? And what do you think is worth more visiting the Dachstein ice caves or salt mines? - Thanks

We only visited the salt mine, so I cannot compare, but between the 2, Rick Steves has a slight preference for the salt mine. We really enjoyed our tour. It was a unique experience for sure!

We were in Hallstatt when it was cold and rainy and it's doable but not the best place to visit. Pretty much everything you want to see is outside and its beauty. We would have loved to rent a boat and enjoy the lake or eat outside. I was sad we missed those things!

Depending on how bad the weather is if it’s clouder it will take your views away but there’s plenty of walks to do and site see. If it’s bad as for rain no not a good place takes away the enjoyment of the lakes and views. Salt mines is worth it.

Hope this helps.

I would not go to Hallstadt in bad weather. It's all about the views. I did not go to the ice caves, but we enjoyed the salt mine. Good for kids too. We spent 2 nights in Hallstadt.

Hi Definitely the Old Town in Salzburg is a good place if it is raining. Actually that is how it was for us, all day so we walked between all the attractions. For us it was not wasted as the weather then improved next day and we saw the outlying attractions.

Hi, Hallstatt.. Sorry for me it is a wasted Day, Yes very attractive, see all the Photographs , But that is all it is, one long street , full of tourists all

trying to take Photographs at the same places. For us we would have preferred to go to St Gilgen and Lake Wolfganges. But that is my Opinion. So really you have to decide, you can not win them all ha ha.

I think that you have gotten some good advice. Just remember that everything is outside at Hallstatt. I am claustrophobic, so I can't comment on the salt mines nor a cave tour. If you have a choice of days, I would wait for a clear day. But if there is no choice as to when you go, then I would hate for you to miss the opportunity to see this village--rain or shine.

We went to visit Hallstatt for a weekend. First we spent the entire day at the Dachstein mountain: went for the 50min Ice Cave tour which was fantastic for us adventurers. It was the best ice cave we have seen so far. Then checked out the 5 fingers lookout and more as they are in one place.

We missed out on the salt mines as we have seen other salt mines in other parts of Europe, nonetheless I believe it could be quite nice.

Be aware, the ice cave walk has steep stairs.

We went to the old town in the afternoon when it was slightly cloudy, however it was still beautiful to walk along the lake, and wonder around. We caught a bit of rain so we ended up back in the apartment for the evening. The towns athmospgere is charming. Even in a gray day I think it’s worth to spend a couple of hours there.

Have a nice trip!

You could visit Hallstatt in the rain though views from the viewing platform would be less attractive. The place is lovely so would be nice in any weather. We didn’t do either the salt mine or the ice caves having done both types of attraction before elsewhere, but if you’ve not done either the salt mines sounds fun with the slides for the miners to descend and which you would use. Great for kids I would think.
