I am considering booking with Rayo Active Travel (which operates out of Calgary, Alberta, in Canada). Does anyone know anything about this tour company? They offer round-trip high-speed train from Madrid and then book hotels along the way and give pilgrims a downloadable customized guide with GPS to walk with on their own. I want to make sure they are reputable. Can I trust them?
Yes, you can absolutely trust Rayo Acitve Travel. We booked our camino experience with them, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port all the way to Santiago. The service was amazing. They booked our rooms with private baths, arranged luggage transfers, taxis, and provided a digital map for our electronic devices. It made the trip stress free and that is a good thing if you are walking 20KM plus every day for over a month. I cannot say enough good about Rayo Active Travel.
Why bother with an agency? It is easy to do yourself. Everyone is a stranger and you will soon make friends to walk with . The Guidebooks tell you everything and there are a few great youtube vids that are good. Camino Forums are not so good--lot of travel light advice from people who don't carry anything because their packs are in a taxi.
I would recommend this company to anyone walking the Camino trail! We were in Spain for a total of 16 days (five of which we walked the trail) and this company took care of everything. All our hotels were booked, all travel (high speed trains, private cars, bus) taken care of, some tours and luggage transfer to all of our hotels. The downloadable ebook was a great source of information including all bookings and recommendations for eating and sightseeing. You were still walking the trail on your own but you have all the assistance that you would need. The hotels that were booked for us were PERFECT. You can choose your level of hotels to suit your budget. THe price for the quality of what we got was exceptional. I cannot say enough about this company (thanks Denis!).
