We waited on the telephone for 1-1/2 hours the 2nd day of this special offer from Holland America on the Oosterdam for 3/31/2021 (38 day cruise). We were assured we'd get the veranda deck (per the advertisement). Then we got the paper reservation later the same day. We did not get the veranda room. When we called on the 3rd day we were told there were no veranda rooms left, but rooms with a window. I don't know about you, but 38 days with just a window in your room is unacceptable. We are still negotiating, and will have an answer in 2 days.

We have cruised with numerous cruise lines and this was our 6th cruise with Holland America. HAL ships are classed as medium sized with between 1500 & 2000 passengers. Oosterdam is one of the larger ones and therefore has more going on. Entertainment was excellent with variety of guests artists in the main theatre as well as the usual BB Kings Blues Club and the piano bar. Other activities each day that you can dip into, or not, as you wish. However this cruise line is not one of the "party" ones, caters largely for an older clientele and consequently does not have lots of silly games around the pool etc. The food and service are excellent as you would expect and the Signature Suites very spacious and comfortable. There is also a good choice of itineraries. This cruise departed from Fort Lauderdale with ports of call at Aruba, full transit of the Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, 3 ports in Mexico and ending in beautiful San Diego. A very enjoyable itinerary with lots of variety and plenty of time in each port. We will certainly continue to make HAL our first choice cruise line.

Whale and dolphin sightings, long naps, great food, excellent entertainment. What is your definition of a cruise. If you want non stop party, emphasis on drinking and raucous noise then you need to look elsewhere. Holland American is an emphasis on safety, hygiene and service. Everywhere the are smiling faces that go out of their way to make your time on board (and off) memorable. NOTHING is forced or expected!

A very comfortable ship, recently renovated, with lots of old world charm and luxury. Our room, not overly large, was spacious and comfortable enough. The room stewards were friendly and efficient. The staff in the dinning room were mostly attentive, but sometimes forgot things. Most staff at the buffet were just learning English, but still worked hard to please the passengers. Food was good and always prepared right. If you're going to spend 17 days on a ship, try this one.

The ship built in 2003 is well maintained and has a friendly competent crew. Food is superb but slow when it gets crowded. Waiters are overworked. Avoid eating near the "Captains" Table. For some reason the engine noise is high here. Other locations in any restaurant are okay. I miss the old library, as all public areas have piped in music that gets annoying after awhile. I have 140 days with Holland American and firmly believe they give you the best value for the $. MUCH better than Princess or Carnival. While not as good as Viking or Azamara, they are less expensive and still VERY good.
