We booked this cruise for 4 main reasons. Short Flight, good itinerary, informal, and price. We went on the Western Med departing from Barcelona then Ajaccio, Naples, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Cannes, Palma and back to Barcelona. I had been ill up until the week before so we only decided to book it 3 days before departure. It did cause a few issues as online check in closes 4 days before departure and we were unable to pre-book anything on the ship. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the main thing we wanted to book was tours and Norwegian offer very poor value on their tours, We did our own thing booking tours on line and it was at least 50% cheaper than booking on the ship. Our cabin was good and the balcony was big enough for a couple. The only downside I can think of was that there are only 2 power sockets which goes down to one when you plug the adapter in, however you can use the shaver socket with an adapter so back to 2 again. The layout is a bit odd in that the shower and the loo are on opposite sides of the entrance door but it wasn’t a problem for us. The ship was around 60% full so we didn’t have to queue for anything other than the initial check in at Barcelona which took around 20 minutes. The only downside to this was that some of the bars were half empty and lacked a bit of atmosphere. We took the “Free at Sea Package” (£99) which gave us two dining upgrades, £50 discount off tours (Worthless), WIFI (Limited to 150 minutes and didn’t work for most of the voyage) and Free booze! The dining upgrades were very good, in fact I would say the steak I had in Cagneys was one of the best I have ever had. The two biggest issues for me was the poor availability of drinks at the various bars and restaurants. The following items were out of stock when we ordered them at one time or another – Rose wine, white wine, prosecco, Peroni, San Miguel, Pina Colada, Mojito , ICE and also they had no straws one day in the pool bar (When my wife was drinking frozen cocktails). All in all shambolic. The food on the whole was pretty good although we were served several meals in The Garden Café that were cold. The main shows in the Theatre were excellent. In the bars it was a bit hit and miss. The Beatles were great, Howl at the Moon pretty poor and there was a blond female singer who was also howling! The ship itself although old is kept immaculately clean by the mainly Filipino crew who were very friendly but did give out conflicting information, depending on who you spoke to. Overall I think we had a pretty good holiday. The weather was beautiful for the full seven days and the itinerary allowed us to visit Pompeii, Rome and Florence which were all outstanding. I notice there are a few people on here carping on about going on lots of cruises and that Norwegian doesn’t stack up against the other lines but that’s unfair as Norwegian are much cheaper than most of the others so given the price we paid I would say it was a pretty good holiday. We were required to wear masks when moving around the ship and had to do a Covid test which we did at the airport before we left (£32). The only other issue regarding Covid was that we had to buy an N95 mask to wear in The Vatican Museum.(€3)

Mixed feelings as this was our first cruise it is difficult to compare with other ships but I have to say that this experience has put us off cruising. The good parts were the food, staff and some of the entertainment. The bad part is hidden costs, cabin design. There was only two of us and small build so I dread to think how some of the people we saw coped in a balcony cabin.

They make you see a doctor if you want any type of medication. They charge $200.00 to see the doctor even if all you want is headache medicine.

The Epic is a beautiful ship and the crew hard working. Food variety is good. Entertainment is some of the best we have seen on over 30 cruises. The production of Pricilla Queen of the Desert was super. The main dining room was very good. The specialty restaurants were above average but not necessarily worth the extra. The free style dining ran smoothly but I'd be concerned how well this ship could handle things if at full capacity. The balcony room design on this ship allows for more rooms in less space. The less space is VERY noticeable. This will be the last time we consider any ship with this room configuration. It felt way too small even for a cruise cabin. Two of our friends had a balcony suite in the Haven area. It was significantly more spacious nd nicely designed . They however did not feel the extra cost was worth the limited benefits. The butler concept was basically worthless. This is our only experience on NCL (over 30 cruises on other lines) and we were simply satisfied but not impressed. Next crise will not likely be on NCL.
