Some very interesting and quirky things to see in here, great for the kids, I loved the Alice in Wonderland display and the world globes. Would be good if looking for a present or adding to a collection, I didn't find anything I wanted to buy but others might, oh and the toilet is worth a look. There is also a cafe out the back.

We had a quick stop here passing on the highway. The shop is more expensive than it used to be but we did enjoy some samples. We miss the orange chocolate segments.

Just south of Latrobe, the forest reserve caters for both walkers and bike riders. The day use and parking area provides excellent facilities.

The walking path along the Mersey River is. Both pleasant and picturesque, providing the opportunity to spot some platypus along the way. We went around the middle of the day and were rewarded with a couple of spotting.

Picturesque area to stretch the legs after a drive, especially as the Axemans Hall of Fame and adjacent Thai restaurant was closed. The Mersey river and the mature trees add an air of tranquility. BBQ facilities, picnic areas, ablutions; great facilities for locals and tourists alike and everything looking well maintained.

At the present time, according to those at the front desk, the Hall of Fame is not yet complete. It does need a bit more organisation and proper display to make it more appealing. Perhaps some sort of conflict going on with local council? Not sure.
Great information though and great setting. Hopefully it will happen soon and be an even greater asset to the town.

The Henry Somerset Orchid Reserve was established in 1981 because of the many orchids found in the Railton Hills, many of them unique to Tasmania. Over 45 species of orchids are found in the reserve which are best visited in Spring or early Summer.

We visited in January which had enjoyed hot and dry weather so orchids were scarce although we did manage to find three species still flowering.

There is a circular walk of about 1km which is level and an easy walk although the walk is blocked by two large trees that have fallen down.

Parking is free and there is no entrance fee. Expect to stay 1-2 hours.

We decided to go on a Saturday afternoon and it was really worth the visit. It was fun and something new but the only downside was there were couple of other people who were really fast

St Luke's is one of a number of churches in Latrobe, an imposing building in Cotton Street. It was the second Anglican church in Latrobe, the foundation stone laid in 1906 and the church dedicated in December 1909. The design was described as "modern decorated Gothic on concrete foundations", constructed in brick and roofed with Marseilles tiles. Closed on the day we visited. I've found it difficult to source any information other that mentioned above. I assume that the buttressing was part of the construction. The square structure incorporating an entry door looks as if it was intended to be a tower but does not extend above the roofline.

War Memorial Park is the site for the War Memorial. The monument was dedicated in 1922 and commemorated those who lost their lives in WW1. It is a white marble statue of an Australian Digger from WW1, standing at ease with rifle held in right hand. The statue is mounted on a granite obelisk which stands on a three stepped base. The rising sun insignia is on each side. There are multiple inscriptions on the obelisk, including those who died in later conflicts. An isolated plaque commemorates the 5th anniversary of Remembrance Day. One of the trees in the park was planted in honour of John Reisz who supplied the sound system for ANZAC services during a continuous 63 year period. Further up the street, at St Patrick's Church, the Memorial Gates commemorate six members of the forces who died during WW11

St Patrick's dates to 1871, designed by a Mr. H. Hunter in the Gothic style and built by a Mr. M Dooley. It was constructed of wood and consisted of a nave, chancel, sacristy and porch, consecrated by the Bishop of Hobart on 15th December. Fr. Noone from Kilkenny, Ireland was the first priest, he arrived in Latrobe in 1863 and was the driving force for the establishment of the church. He had also established a school in the district and founded St Patrick's in 1887, employing a lay teacher. Latrobe was also the first location where the Sisters of Mercy were established in Tasmania with the arrival of Sr Agnes in 1892, the Order taking charge of the school shortly afterwards. Fr. Noone is remembered with a memorial in the church grounds. A raised chalice and harp carved on a Celtic cross stand in a small fenced enclosure.

Latrobe Baptist Church is one of many Tabernacles funded by William Gibson Perth and was often referred to as a Gibson Tabernacle. The foundation stone was laid in October 1891 and the church opened for services in February 1892. An attractive building, consisting of the church and vestry at the rear. It is painted in pastel colour with window and door surrounds and façade wall sides painted white. Unlike his first Tabernacle in Perth, this is a structure of simple design with filials adorning each corner and the apex of the roof.
