Adjacent to Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge, Belize Botanic Gardens is a labor of love, a marvelous place for botanist and birders to stroll and observe.
When Ken & Judy acquired this land in 1993 it was just cow pasture and with their labor of love plus lots of dedicated help have transformed it into a slice of heaven right here on earth.

There is an area further up in the mountains that is typically the spot to hang out and enjoy the cool mountain water (Rio on the Pools) but I may have found a new favorite.
We had our picnic lunch there, swam, relaxed in the sun, and followed the pools south a good distance.

Barton Creek Cave

Cayo 6.7 mi away
#5 of 32 Nature & Parks in Cayo
The cave is amazing, with wonderful natural formations which seem to get better as the boat ventures ever deeper, and the awe increases with signs of Mayan rituals, including evidence of human sacrifice.
This cave was a Mayan ceremonial site where human sacrifice was carried out, so on top of the amazing cave formations, the cave contains artifacts and human remains.

This is the perfect spot to stop after the long drive to Caracol! Easy to get to, as it is right off the main road and only a short easy walk from where you park down to the river.
We had a 'bonus' day to fill while in San Ignacio and chose a guided tour of Mountain Pine Reserve booked out of Table Rock Lodge.

It is on private property and was discovered in 1989 by William (or his dog, whom he credits) who provides the tours and is sometimes helped by his daughter Jessica.
They learned the history of the cave and its artifacts from the scientists, and Jessica was a friendly and informative guide.

Kurt pointed out different trees, he gave us a history lesson about the Mayan ruins in the area and the trade across the river valley.
We booked our horseback riding/Xunantunich tour through our lodge at Macaw Bank, and this ended up being our favorite thing we did in Belize!

You could spend a decent amount of time (an hour, at least) climbing around and exploring if you wanted to or just stop in a take in all the different rock formations that are present in the cave.
You pass wonderful nature and cultural sites all the way and we enjoyed our day.

The tour is a great mixture of walking/swimming through a river inside the cave - the temperature is very comfortable - , a small climb inside the cave and a tour of Mayan artifacts and human remains.
He was very knowledgeable and encouraging as we forded the river (3 times in and 3 times back), swam through the cave entrance (and a few other areas, depending on your height), and climbed through and up many rocks.
