Hired a bike for the day to cycle part of the famous ronde. Staff was very friendly and helpful, my bike was ready to go on arrival, changing room and shower facilities very good also. Enjoyed my ride and the bike performed wonderfully. Recommend this experience to anyone.

This museum has different themes on the floors with the ground floor with local history, next has the tapestries and top the silver collection.

The multi media for the local history is interesting and informative with English explanations, but this was lacking for other exhibits. Everything was in Flemish which must limit the information from most tourists .

The information about the painter Adriaen Brouwer was fascinating, and it was good to see his paintings and statue in the town.

Tapestries are the best I have seen, with good colours and historical content. A wonderful collection in a town so famous for its tapestries.

It was 14 euros for a senior admission which was a reasonable entrance fee. We appeared however to be one of only a few visitors

    Worth a visit

In the city of Oudenaarde we also have visited “the Town Hall” who was built by architect Hendrik van Pede in between 1526–1537 this to replace the medieval “Aldermen's House” that occupied the same site. Another older structure, the 14th century Cloth Hall, was retained and now forms a sort of extension at the back of the Town Hall proper. In 1999, the town hall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France site, because of its representation of the civic influence of the town and its architecture, and on the moment of our visit there was a fancy fair ongoing, nice to see..

Such an amazing experience for the cycling enthusiasts of the world. I will never complain about another crappy road here in the states. These cobbles make you appreciate all roads.

Great tour, which was very interesting, and wonderful beers to sample in the tasting room. Impossible to find Belgian beers for sale at very reasonable prices.

Oudenaarde has two major old churches, one on the left bank of the River Scheldt – Saint Walburga - and one on the right bank, Our Lady of Pamele. This is due to the fact that Pamele was an independent town with its own church until 1593. Seeing Our Lady’s from over the water, with its octagonal tower over the crossing and the corner turrets of the pointed façade, we thought it looked gorgeous. The church was built in the 13th century, but the vaulting of the nave and the transept took place in 1501-1516. The building underwent several later transformations. Inside there is an interesting triforium but the church furniture is nothing special. The Gothic Revival stained glass dates from the 20th century. At the back of the church, flanking the portal, there is a late-gothic and a Renaissance tomb of lords of Oudenaarde and their wives, but they are badly damaged. One of the men looks as if he has been decapitated. In the church we met a very friendly men who explained to us why Oudenaarde was once called ‘little Bruges’. We couldn’t believe several arms of the Scheldt River had been meandering their way through the centre.

Vising Our Lady of Pamele, we took the opportunity to have a look at other interesting buildings on the right bank of the Scheldt River: the House de Lalaing, the Gothic Revival courthouse (1922-1925) and the adjoining prison (1919) to the left of the lift bridge and the remains of Maagdendale Abbey to the right. On our way to the church we also saw a rather nice-looking fountain on Louise Mariekaai with three superposed basins decorated with elegant cast-iron figures. It was no coincidence it made us think of Paris. Architect Charles Vanderstraeten, who designed the fountain, was inspired by the fountains on Place de la Concorde in Paris (France).

This béguinage is quite tiny but very nice, whitewashed and peaceful! Close to the river Scheldt!
Should be added to a visit to Oudenaarde after the main square and the beautiful city hall.

While we were in Belgium in the region where we were born we took the advantage of visiting the Saint Walburga Church, on earlyer visits we could not seen the inside, but now we were lucky the church was open.
This is the first church probably founded at the end of the 10th century or the beginning of the 11th century together with the settlement with an important commercial activity, possibly at the initiative of the Count of Flanders who acquired the patronage of the church from the bishop of Tournai in 1027 and this until the end of the ancien regime retained. The patrocinium of Sint-Walburga, mainly scattered in urban settlements in the 10th century, which also confirms the relatively late establishment. In 1030 mention of the transfer of relics from St. Walburga and an assembly of bishops and nobility in the church under Boudewijn IV. Due to the lack of any archaeological research, nothing is known of the oldest church building.

The tourist office is ideally located in the Town Hall, where the main museum of Oudenaarde is also to be found. Upon arrival we picked up a free map here and were provided with a 20 pages A4 ‘touristic magazine’ rather oddly entitled ‘Oudenaarde Trump’, which made us smile. Large brochures are not very handy to walk around with. This one wasn’t very informative either. It had lots of large pictures but little text. We also regretted the fact that the city map had no numbered list of sights but, on the plus side, it was large and the street names were well legible. There also was a useful free brochure on the two most important churches of the town. Enough for a day in Oudenaarde. The desk staff was helpful and friendly. The tourist office has a small shop with books, postcards and souvenirs.
