This is an amazing place - you want to visit the inside rooms of the palace, but you can’t miss the huge gardens - take your time , it is a big area to cover, but you won’t regret.

Very few people were strolling about the many wide, shaded avenues, despite there being no cost for entry. Hundreds of fountains, watered by kilometers of thick, underground piping. These extensive woods and walks are maintained by an army of gardeners (obviously capable), and ample funds.

If you are visiting the nearby Palace, this museum makes an interesting addition to the day. The museum is quite large, with exhibitions of glass ranging in age from antiquity up to the present day. The major focus is on glass that was actually created in the royal glass factory, of course. The galleries are quite scattered, so the pamphlet that you can get at the entrance, with a map of the building, is helpful.

However, the highlight was the glass-blowing exhibition. According to my guidebook, this takes place every day other than Monday (when the museum is closed), from 10 or 11 AM to about 2:45 PM.

There is a large parking lot just to the west of the building.

We really enjoyed our visit to La Granja and we were delighted to find that there was plenty of free parking just a short walk from the palace and gardens. The visit to the palace took something around an hour as there were many beautiful rooms to see. The ceilings in many rooms are spectacular. At points the rooms were so crowded with tour groups that we had to either wait or attempt to get past. Visitors are not permitted to take backpacks inside the palace and they have to be left in lockers. Be sure to go equipped with a 1 euro coin (which is refunded on your return.) There is strictly no photography inside the palace and this is enforced by the many security guards.
If you are just interested in the gardens, they are free and absolutely lovely. Be warned, however, that there is no cafeteria on the site, so be sure to take water with you. There are numerous fountains, but they only run on certain days at set times. The gardens are extensive and one could easily spend a whole day there.
