We took a two hour boat ride on the lake, looking for the hippos & crocs. We were also rewarded with flamingos, stork, fish eagles and pelicans, just to name a few of the birds! It’s always nice to be out on the water, and this was no exception!

We spent 4 days and 3 nights (all camping in villages) with Emani, Kalu (driver), and Woito (cook), and I was very happy with the experience. I felt confident going with a guide with as much experience and positive reviews as Emani, and I respected and trusted his judgment and his leadership of our trip.

We traveled through Arba Minch and Konso (we highly recommend a local guide named Kussi if you stop in Konso) on our own, and met Emani and crew in Keyafer. Emani was very responsive via WhatsApp in helping us create a plan that fit our needs. In case it's useful for others planning trips, our itinerary was like this:

Day 1 - Alduba Tuesday market, Dassanech village visit, camp in Hamer village near Turmi
Day 2 - Wake up Hamer village, Karo and Nyangatom village visits, camp in Banna village near Keyafer
Day 3 - Wake up Banna village, walk to Keyafer Thursday market, stopver in Jinka, camp in Mursi village
Day 4 - Wake up Mursi village, return drive to Jinka, hike in local hills to see Ari communities

    Some of the major highlights:

-The first morning, Emani suggested that we get out of the vehicle and walk several kilometers on the road with Banna people who were en route to the Alduba market. This was so much better than being insulated from all the activity in a car. From this point on it was evident that Emani loves being with and amongst the people, and we benefitted from his strong rapport and relationships with many community members. We also walked part of the way through the countryside to the Banna village, and the next morning from that village we joined with locals walking to the Keyafer market. This allowed us to be more connected to the local rhythm of life.

-Camping, all 3 nights! This allowed us to see and interact with people going about their normal activities, rather than the less "natural" experience of arriving in a village by car, strolling around, taking photos of people, and then leaving shortly after. (That said, the local guides that we had for the Dassanech, Karo, and Nyangatom visits all did a good job explaining life in their respective villages.) It was the end of the dry season, and on the first night we listened to the beautiful sound of Hamer women and children singing for rain for a couple hours. Two nights later in the Mursi village we camped in a wild thunder and lightning storm - one of the first rains of the season had arrived - amazing to come full circle like that! Woito also prepared great dinners and breakfasts.

-Emani's style - as I mentioned above, he knows how to put local people of all ages at ease and make them laugh, which in turn enables his clients to also feel more comfortable. Emani has a big yet gentle personality, but importantly his presence does not dominate your experience. Rather, he provides you with the space to walk around freely, and to engage with people from the tribes however you would like. I appreciated that while he gave us our freedom, he was also always available to answer our questions and help translate when we wanted. I think that anyone with a curious mind who asks lots of questions will be very happy with Emani's knowledge and his willingness to share it. He is also passionate about protecting the environment from deforestation, and this conversation added perspective to our trip.

-Willingness to accommodate requests - after we left the Mursi village where we camped, I mentioned that I wished I had tried the sorghum porridge that is the staple food for the Mursi. Emani suggested that we stop at a different village along the way, and he had someone cook up a fresh batch for us to enjoy as a 2nd breakfast. This was a simple but very nice touch.

On the last night, Emani checked in and asked whether it would be okay for him to depart with the vehicle on the last day and not join us for the Ari trekking because of a family situation that he needed to attend to. We were very happy with the overall experience he had curated, and we did not have a problem with this. In Jinka, Emani introduced us to the local Ari guide he contracted with, and helped to make sure that all went smoothly.

From our experience with Emani I can feel that he does his best to adapt to the preferences and needs of each client he works with, and I enthusiastically recommend traveling with him!

All round excellent experience. We desperately needed transport from Hawassa to Arba Minch and I was fortunate to find Kassahun's details on a travel website. Despite failing to reach him the first time he called me back straight away the next day. No other hotel, website, tour group, taxi company etc were interested in helping whereas Kassahun was fantastic - agreeing for a driver to pick us up and do a tour, including to the Dorzai, on our drive. We wouldn't have made it without him! Our driver Yesak on the day was also excellent.

The next day when the hotel couldn't help to organise any tours that we wanted to do, within an hour of calling, Kassahun again worked his magic and arranged a boat, a car, all park access and kind, understanding drivers.

Couldn't recommend going through Kassahun any higher - he's friendly, interested, knows the region, and he organised everything for us at good prices. I hope to organise a hiking tour at some point soon.

I travelled to Arba Minch and surrounding area and Omo valley tribes on a 5 day trip organised by Gamo travel tours as a party of 2. From the initial discussion about what our interests were with Wes, the personal attention to detail and approach to ensuring we had a wonderful trip was evident. In each village and market we visited, the wonderful culture of this area came to life, with expert guidance making it interesting and fun. Thank you Wes and team at Gamo!

We did Omo valley tour and it was truly once in a lifetime experience. Our guide Haile was excellent, gave us lot of information about the tribes, culture etc. Made our journey very enjoyable and fun. Also adjusted to our needs. We learnt a lot of the tribes way of life and felt very welcome when we visited their homes.

Huge shout out to the tour driver Abbey, who was fantastic and took great care of us all the way.

Travelled down to Arba Minch, Lake Chamo, Awassa, Dorze tribe and the Bale Mountains with a group of friends. We were not sure as to what expect from Ethiopia, but it was a truly awesome trip, in in the least because we had Dagi to show us around.

Dagi is a professional guide with an extensive amount of knowledge about his beautiful country. We had a great time with Dagi, he speaks English fluently and at the end he felt like he was one of the friends. As if we were really traveling together, not with a guide.

Bus as I mentioned, Dagi is extremely knowledgable of his country. He can spot birds and other wildlife miles away, if you want to see a particular species in Ethiopia, I am confident he’ll be able to bring you. In doing so, he is always respectful to nature and the people of Ethiopia.

When it comes to accommodation, give him an indication of how luxurious you want it to be and he will give you the best price/quality option. From sleeping in a hotel to sleeping in tents. The same goes for restaurants, I think he literally knows each place. Depending on the terrain you’re going he will bring the appropriate vehicle which are all well-maintained.

Antu is the best guide who we've ever met! He makes the travelling very easy and smooth, and has a very great knowledge about the tribes, the geology and history as well. He always knows everything about the local conditions and has friends everwhere. He is also a fantastic company to hang out with. He can be the difference between akward time and amazing experience in the Omo Valley! Highly recommended!

We got connected to Tariku through our hotel Haile Resorts desk. He quoted us a much more reasonable amount than three other tour operations we had spoken to.
With Tariku we visited Dorze tribe one day, and Konso tribe another day. Both the visits were full of interaction and knowledge sharing by Tariku. He even indulged us when we wanted to know more about Ethiopian politics and history and his personal experiences growing up! We also chatted with him about climate change, sustainable tourism etc and he was so knowledgeable about all of these things.

Tariku was also flexible about adjusting the itinerary (and accordingly the money), as we didn’t feel like visiting Lake Chamo on third day and wanted to relax in our hotel.
The only feedback would be to turn on the air conditioning in mini van, as it was quite hot during the long journey of 80kms to Konso tribe village. We were exhausted not just because of the bumpy roads, but wish we had asked for air conditioning to be turned on.
For all other things, Tariku is a great guide to enjoy Arba Minch
