I used to like this place in pre-COVID days. BUT, things have changed. And from my perspective NOT for the better.
Back in the good old days, the atmosphere was casual. No need for reservations to listen to music. No cover charges (which their website fails to mention by the way, at least as of 7/8/24). Today, it can be $10 per person and possibly more. Since wine by the glass will cost you $15 minimum (or more in most cases) and by the bottle it can easily exceed $60, I don't see the need to add on $10 per person charges for things that used to be FREE like local music.
What used to be a mostly open patio, now is surrounded by a tall wooden fence. Keep in mind that this place is in an industrial area and is behind a stone/slate business so noise should not be an issue. The patio is now enclosed with tables setup in a strict linear pattern. Far too much structure, but it fits with the $10 per head fee for music.
True to form, they still are 95+% red wines. They do have a rose at the moment, but who knows for how long. So if you prefer white wines or at least having the choice, this is not the place for you.
They use the slogan, Toast The Train. This refers to the fact that the property is right next to the railroad tracks and as trains went by and often blew their whistles in the old days, you were supposed to toast them as they passed. Well with the enclosed patio, you no longer can see the train as it passes. Nice touch!
And people (the two owners specifically), you own a winery that attracts customers (both current and new) to your location. So you are customer-facing. Try to smile once in awhile. Try to be courteous to both those you know and those you do not. We can do without the indifferent attitude and scowls.
The good news for those of you who have bothered to read this far is that there are alternatives to this place in the Ventura and Oxnard areas - ones that are quite good, have local music (FOR FREE) including some of the bands you'll pay $10 or more a person to see at Plan B, have a more balanced selection of wines, have lower prices AND are actually friendly. So my advice, go to "PLAN C" - other wineries.
