What travelers are saying
- John WatsonLeeds, UK166 contributionsWe normally use the P&O service from Hull but the prices over the last year have more than doubled .
So I looked at DSDS from Newcastle and it’s soooooo much cheaper so we drove the extra hour to Newcastle .
Checkin staff were lovely and the terminal is lovely and clean, we got on really fast.
It’s clear that the ship is very old in comparison to P&Os Price of Hull/Rotterdam but it’s clearly had some recent refurbishment work which made it really nice plenty of natural light coming through, which is far better than P&O overall I think the ship is pretty decent. All the public areas feel really clean and fresh I would imagine that the ship is very recently had a refurbishment. The rooms were spacious and well laid out. Beds were comfortable and decent enough for me and I’m 6 foot pillows were comfortable bathroom was good. I like the fact that there’s a built-in radio in the room that’s really good.
We had food in the restaurant, which is really good. I was amazed that the things like sushi available and the buffet was really nice. Plenty of choice good quality and a nice environment. I wasn’t as impressed with breakfast as it was dinner, but it was still really good value for money.
The staff on board are absolutely lovely and cannot be folded in anyway the duty freeze nice and big and there’s a lovely Starbucks on board that has loads of board games but don’t try and play Jenga like we did on a fairly rough night. It’s quite hard to play.
My only real nick is at night time the boat is quite loud when you’re trying to sleep, but other than that I slept like a logWritten February 8, 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Parked in the South shore carpark just up the hill from the shopping centre, a short walk away. Ferries run all the time and you can see them depart and arrive at the other side, down stream. The journey is around 10 minutes with a short waiting time. It's not expensive and young children are free. On the North shore there are pubs, cafes and fish and chips and ice creams. The Fish quay has fresh fish for sale. It takes around 10 to 15 minutes to walk or catch the bus on the main road. Grandson loved it and wished it took longer. The ferry crew were great, friendly and gave out a ferry drawing to colour in for the kids.Written August 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - YORKIENorth York Moors National Park, UK88 contributionsWhat a lovely peaceful place to walk around , quite busy . We stopped at the little cafe for tea and scones and they were so good, free to enter this quiet little gem, parking outside ample and freeWritten June 27, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mukhasbenSouth Shields, UK4,458 contributionsFish, tapas, American and British restaurants too name a few alongside the typical fresh fish shops (live crabs), these were some of the things we’d never seen as we’d only been as far as the low lights tavern before. We didn’t know in our ignorance that North Shields had a beach (we are Sanddancers from South Shields) and history (monument to lost fishermen). Now we have got past the great Low Lights Tavern, we fancy trying the Salty Dog next. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, smoked haddock and fresh prawns bought, and it was popular too even coming to the end of the Summer.Written August 31, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - aurioleb68Newcastle upon Tyne, UK4 contributionsA really nice bar in the middle of North Shields with a lovely courtyard where you can sit outside. The only drawback is that smoking is allowed in the courtyard. We have been a few times on a sunny day but we were unable to enjoy the outside space as we could not stand all the smoking in what is quite an enclosed space.Written June 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It still needs more coffee outlets. Casta was over run. Won't ask for a decaff in the ice cream shop as they get it out of a jar. Still a lot of empty units and the clock in the middle still not working.Written March 3, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Molly1888Newcastle upon Tyne, UK24 contributionsClean and tidy but very small and only a handful of shops are open. Mostly catering for the older people with the likes of Bon Marche, a couple of cafes, a charity shop and a couple of discount stores. There’s definitely nothing here for the younger generations. You won’t find anything trendy or fashionable to buy.Written June 28, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
