Even if you have no interest in Astronomy, you will love this trip, it is something different. If you have even a passing interest in Astronomy, this will blow you away.
After being collected from our hotel, the bus drove for half an hour or so to a local restaurant, to stop for what is best described as a simple 3 course meal which was perfectly adequate, before continuing on it's journey.
First stop was to watch the sun set and take a few pictures, then back on the bus for 40 minutes or so before arriving at the final destination - a roadside area where several telescopes were already setup. Darkness was just creeping in as we stepped from the coach, with just a couple of planets visible, but as our eyes adjusted and the night became fully dark, the number of stars visible was just breathtaking.
There was plenty of time to use the telescopes, making it possible to view Saturn with it's rings visible, Jupiter and it's moons, as well as Orion's nebula and other deep space objects.
The guide, Ozzy, was phenomenal. Very personable and knowledgeable. He introduced himself on the bus, speaking to the party in their own languages (including a few words from Essex) and explaining the proceedings. He relayed some really interesting information about Tenerife and the volcanic activity in the area. He was even more passionate when it came to the astronomy, which made the trip all the more enjoyable. Just talking about the vastness of the universe and the distances involved made me need a little sit down. Ozzy take a bow.
Take some money, because Pablo's hot chocolate is also amazing!
