- ScotlandmacGlasgow, UK12,814 contributionsThe blow hole is quite a sight as is the small rock stack offshore. We saw it in a misty, low cloud day and it looked very atmospheric.Well worth the drive out.Lovely sea pinks on the rocks too, in May.
Not any parking as such though few cars there when we arrived on a gloomy day.Written May 24, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. What a grim reminder of the suffering of those souls during the famine. This is a very poignant depiction of suffering and a visceral attempt to escape hunger and death. I think anyone viewing this needs to do a bit of studying on the Great Famine beforehand. In true Irish fashion, this is understated and gripping in a deeply emotional way. It evokes the same feelings as the sculptures on the quay in Dublin. No explanation needed.Written October 9, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Trish AGrand Blanc, MI267 contributionsRight in the middle of town(octagon). We stayed at the Wyatt so it was right out their front entrance. Be careful of the traffic.Written April 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- John MLyon, France1,948 contributionsThis tourist attraction is known locally as “the Oscar Wilde statue” – there are such monument to the colourful Irish poet and playwright in several locations, including a collection of three statues (Memorial Sculpture) in Merrion Square in Dublin, and an outdoor sculpture by Maggi Hambling in central London. In addition there is the formidable tomb of Oscar Wilde in Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France. It seems few people outside of Estonia are aware of the esteemed Estonian writer Eduard Wilde, who was Oscar’s contemporary and now shares a stone bench with him, snugly located between Matt O’Flaherty’s pharmacy and Lazlo’s Jewellry shop in William St. The well-finished bronze-cast statue is a replica of the original statue in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by the local artist, Tiiu Kirsipuu. When Estonia joined the EU in 2004 this copy was gifted to Galway in western Ireland.
From an aesthetics viewpoint we found the monument to the rather sobre – it depicts an imaginary dialogue between the 2 writers; Eduard Vilde, with legs crossed looks directly at Wilde, with hat resting in his lap has a walking stick in his right hand. At the risk of being churlish, in the face of such bonhomie and Estonian generosity, Oscar does seem to lack his humorous spirit and creativity – perhaps his face is too well known? Nevertheless, you will discover people enjoying this statue as a photo op or seat on any shopping trip to downtown Galway, where they’re often joined by buskers for a traditional music session and warm convivial atmosphere.Written March 1, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I wish there had been more information as to what the sculpture represented but it is worth stopping at for pictures and a good break on the drive to county Sligo.Written May 26, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland8,688 contributionsThe Connenara Giant is well worth a stop. It's located in Recess opposite Joyce's on the main Oughterard to Clifden Road not far from Maam Cross.
The statue is really cool, exactly as it says in the title- a stone giant crouched on a plinth. The inscription is hilarious that it was erected for no reason whatsoever on a site/date where nothing happened!!!
Great views across the water behind him. - InscribeSligo, Ireland364 contributionsThe historic Humbert Memorial which is located at Humbert Street Ballina town Co Mayo was oridinally erected in 1898 to the memory of General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert (1767-1823) and the people who were gave up their lives to try to free their country. The Humbert Memorial is widely regarded as an important part of the heritage of County Mayo.
The memorial was completed in time on the 100th anniversary of the 1798 rebellion. Historically on 22nd August 1798, a French expedition of 1,000 men under the command of General Humbert landed at Kilcummin, north of Killala. They were joined by 3000 Irish volunteers who had neither proper weapons or training. At first they were successful but luck turned against them on 8th September at Ballinamuck Co Longford. The French surrender was accepted, but some 2.000 Irish were massacred.
The figure on the monument is not General Humbert but Mother Ireland. Maud Gonne Mc Bride (friend of the poet W.B. Yeats) unveiled the monument as part of the centenary celebrations. The monument was moved to its current location on Humbert Street in 1987 where it was rededicated to the memory of Maude Gonne's son Sean Mc Bride who was a founding member of Amnesty International and who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1974.Written December 19, 2015This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
