Anyway, the church is built partially on what remains of the Cistercian Abbey and it’s mighty impressive in scale, light quality and wall paintings of the time of Queen Anne.
Anyone who has an interest in history or who just wants a few moments of peace and quiet -- I would strongly recommend a stop by Dore Abbey!

The castle is another fantastic offering and if you climb the stairs, you have the most amazing countryside views!
We liked that we were able to climb up onto one of the castle walls, it was great to be able to look down on the central courtyard & get a different perspective.

Interesting place with lovely gardens and plant centre (great plants at very reasonable prices) Run pretty much on an honesty box method, so unusual in this day and age!
A walk through the woods and past the house and deer park was also good.

Loved visiting the castle, such a tranquil place, great to read the history of the place and the views from the top are amazing!
I spent a while just sitting and enjoying the stillness and nature watching in the well preserved castle grounds - magical!

A perfect picnic spot for a glorious sunny afternoon - try the field next to the castle car park , with a view of the lovely Norman church and the splash of the river Monnow yards away.
Overall we both had a really great time and felt really calm the whole time we were at the castle and village, there is a real special atmosphere in this Castle.

An extension to the cathedral to exhibit the mappamundy and the chained library is well worth a visit if you are interested in how the earth was drawn by early scholars as well of volumes of medieval books.
