- annReading_UKReading, UK62 contributionsAn afternoon stop after lunch in Asciano, my expectation was not high of an Abbey off the beaten track. After parking in the well-marked area by the tower we crossed the drawbridge into the abbey grounds. A stroll down hill past two chapels took us to the main buildings. Entry ticket of 4 Euros took us into the cloisters with amazing frescoes telling the story of St Benedict, a library filled with beautiful old illuminated manuscripts and a gallery with a priceless collection of religious paintings and medieval altar objects. We entered the church just as the Brothers arrived for prayer: we hid by the door and listened in awe as they chanted the office in exactly the way their predecessors have done for centuries. An amazingly peaceful, impressive place to visit! Practical issues: there are toilets, vending machines for drinks and snacks, and a book store. There is a bar/restaurant by the entrance. If you're in the area allow time for a glimpse into a different world.Written June 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Brun066Florence, Italy12,580 contributionsI didn't know this singular monument; I searched for it at my return home, after I accidentally came across it during a trek in "Crete Senesi" area.
On the web there is enough information on the work of art: I learned so the author's name, the meaning of the different items that make up the sculpture, in a word I inserted the sculpture in the context that makes it understandable.
Here I would just like to recall that the wonderful panorama, enjoyable from the spot where sculpture stands, is simply one of the many ones that you can enjoy in this area.
The area is also called "Accona Desert", according to a definition dating back to the Middle Ages; or more specifically, "Le Crete of Leonina"; that is, the clay soils around the ancient settlement of Leonina; a settlement very close to the "Site Transitoire", which once was a fortified farmhouse owned by the powerful Chigi family, and now is occupied by a country hotel.
The area of "Site Transitoire" and of Leonina can not be reached just by car; as many web pages that mention the monument, seem to understand The area may also be the field of trekking circuits (or even of linear paths using the surrounding railway stations). In fact, encountering the "Site Transitoire" during these treks (as happened to us) is, in my opinion, much more enjoyable, because the spirit of the places will be better understood.
One single warning: planning a walking route, at least in "Leonina" area, is best if based on topographic tourist maps, which show (overall in red colour) the trail paths (the maps are sold by newsagents, stationeries, etc., and of course by the bookshops of nearby cities, such as Siena or Florence). That's because the trails are poorly (or even not at all) signposted on the site; as we sadly found out through our experience.Written November 19, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - nancylohuisPrinceton, WV2 contributionsOur group of 5 visited Il Molinello Agriturismo as part of our gravel roads cycling tour in Tuscany in August 2021. Owners Alessandro and Elise were our tour guides for the cycling trip and also opened their home and farm to us for lunch in their outdoor garden on one of our cycling days. The setting was authentic and the food was phenomenal, utilizing a farm to table menu and their home grown olive oil. Alessandro, an expert in all things olive oil, gave us an excellent presentation on the details. Their farm also has a field of lavender and alternative bee therapy. Alessandro has a love of cycling like no other with a Cycling museum of his own for you to enjoy. Elise has a lovely shop with olive oils, and all things lavender as well as Eroica cycling jerseys for purchase. If you are looking for an interesting combination of what local Tuscany has to offer, try this true gem off the beaten path!Written December 5, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - bob6626Dublin, Ireland26 contributionsWe visited this hidden gem having bought a combined ticket at the nearby Museo Civico. It’s a delight, mostly featuring 19th century Italian artists. Much of the art is on classical themes but the portraits were our favorites. The museum is well laid out over two floors, and with enough descriptive material in. English to make it accessible. Well worth a visit.Written July 7, 2018This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
