Our family of five had an amazing overnight/2 day trip with a private guide to the beautiful Viñales valley. I found our guide, José Javier Morales, through good reviews on trip advisor and he exceeded our expectations! He suggested an itinerary and worked with us to shape it to what suited us as the kids were keen to do horse riding and zip lining. We also did a boat tour through the Indian Caves, saw an impressive mural and went to a tobacco farm. The activities were all well organised, fun and interesting. We also learnt such a lot about how Cuban society functions from Javi and really enjoyed our time with him and the driver Carlos who drove us around in a classic car. They were understanding about the needs of younger kids. Absolutely top rated. Javi is very responsive on WhatsApp: +53 5 2658393 and speaks fluent English.

Cueva del Indio is close to Viñales and easy to get to. The cave system is well lit and has easy to traverse paths. The last segment of the caves one travels by boat to the exit. Interesting and fun.

We went to this experience only knowing that we would be visiting a cave. Unfortunately we were not adequately prepared for the demands of the climb up to the cave and back from the cave and the terrain in the cave. This is a very strenuous experience which calls for good hiking shoes and a body in good condition. We all are in ours late 60's/70's and now have a great story to tell but the recovery physically was impressive. Just know what you are getting into. They also give you a helmet with a headlight which you absolutely need as the cave is dark in many places and there are many spots to bump your head.

A lively and interesting tour of the botanical gardens. Our guide made it a great experience and we learnt the origins of food we take for granted.

Palenque de los Cimarrones was easy to traverse. The path through the the caves is relatively short, perhaps a 15 minute walk. The scenery at the exit is beautiful.

Vinales is quite small town with not so many interesting buildings and architecture. Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is located in Central Part of town. This small cream-colored church anchors Viñales' equally diminutive main square.

That is absolutely a must being in Vinales. You need to try horse ride. Beautiful valley, trying Cuban coffee, rum and cigars.

Very pleasant hike from Vinales. On the way there you pass some farms and a small pond. You have a beautiful view on Mogotes. The cave is quite big and has a nice view.

We were wandering through town and saw the entrance to a garden. Walked in and was greeted by Senor Jesus Arencibia Coro. This is his personal garden. He walked around and showed us all the interesting artifacts that he has collected and taught us about the medicinal properties of the plants in the garden. Look for this place- there is no charge. A donation is nice though.

The mural itself is pretty indifferent, so I think it’s important to hedge expectations - but you can’t really come to Viñales and not see. It’s quite cool as a brief amusement; above all, however, the area surrounding the mural - whether you’re visiting by bike, horse or on foot - is stunning, and so if you throw a visit to the mural into a wider tour of the valley then you definitely won’t feel short changed.

Taking a horseback riding excursion through the valley is not to be missed. Definitely visit at least 2 farms to get 2 different ideas/perspectives. The farmers will tell you as much as you want to know about tobacco, rum and coffee production for free, but please do buy their farm fresh wares because that is the way they get paid for these tours. The plantations are operated without electricity or machinery, using traditional methods. There is so much beauty and pride in the way of life here. Definitely one of my favorite spots in Cuba. We spent only one night here, but if I had the chance for a do-over, I would have chosen 2: one to explore and one to sit and just enjoy the view while reading, writing, and relaxing.

I can highly recommend Taxi Viñales, they are extremely professional, all the drivers arrived on time and drove safely. We had to change our itinerary due to personal issues and they adapted extremely quickly, finding us a driver within an hour. Very reactive on Whatsapp for any emergency.

Yosbel was a really great and personable guide. Knowledgeable, interesting and spoke great English. A trained veterinarian he shared a lot about the farms, lives, animals and plants around us. It was more like a ride with a good friend.

He also helped us become better riders, as neither of us on the tour were very experienced but he showed us how to make sure the horses actually went where we wanted at the speed we wanted.

I have been on horseback tours in Vinales two other times and this was definitely my best experience.
