When at Honolulu a visit to Doris Duke’s former home, now a museum dedicated to art from the Islamic tradition, is a must see. At every turn beauty surrounds you, ceiling to floor. The glazed, terracotta tiles are the stand-out throughout the house; but those tiles in the Dining Room are breathtaking. Make certain to see Miss Duke’s white marble-clad bathroom; and look up at the ceiling there and in her dressing room. The number of days Shangri La is open are limited, as are the number of guests permitted per tour. The advice is book early, because this gem is not to be missed!

The museum is bigger than it looks on the outside. Defs needed a map to navigate. I loved how open and airy it is. I was surprised by the immense diversity of artwork they have in their collection. Works from various cultures and time periods. One of my favorite art museums so far. Loved the temporary “Awakening” exhibit that you can actually walk through/under and smell the flowers.

With so so weather we needed a plan B and this was a good way to kick off the afternoon. Budget a bit over an hour for your visit. Very friendly and helpful staff. Easy to get to by The Bus, and close enough to the Iolani Palace to fit them both in for a nice morning or afternoon.

Passage, made of Bronze and Stainless Steel erected in 1993
Passage symbolizes Hawaii's transition into the future. Represented in the dark surfaces of the arch are the challenges we face. On the other side, the polished surface signifies our reaction to these challenges after they have been met.
