This place is amazing! There are so many birds and you get up close to bald eagles! My favorite thing about the Alaska Raptor Center is that they do their best at rehabilitating birds and getting them back into the wild!

The park is impressive, with its many totems and lush trees, but what we remember is the back story of the native clans and their connection to each totem. One guide told the group that she would only speak about the totems created by her people, so as not to possibly offend other clans and their messages.

So sweet to see these adorable, burly and strong animals in a supportive environment. Happy to have provided to their care with the entrance fee! Could have watched them all day.

This small museum contains the collections assembled during the late 1800's of the various Alaskan tribes. The glass cased displays contain the larger items from native life. The real treasure can be found in the drawers below the display cases. Here you see, up close, the items from daily life.

The staff is extremely knowledgeable. The most interesting fact is the silverware was created by reshaping Russian coins. There is no local silver in Alaska. The Russians initially couldn't figure out how their currency was disappearing.

To get to the trailhead you have to drive about six miles up Harbor Mt Road, just off Halibut Point Road. The road is a one lane gravel road with lots of switchbacks and tight turns. Drive slow and easy and you’ll be fine. The hike is 2.5 miles to a shelter, and is up and down, than up and down and than up one more time. The views are amazing on a clear day. When we went up the clouds rolled in, it started to drizzle and then the sun came out. Great hike, a bit more challenging than expected

This was a great place to visit and learn about the ties of the Russian Orthodox Church in Sitka, Alaska. Please if you have time take a few minutes to go and view the artifacts at the Bishops House in Sitka, Alaska

Out of respect you should remove your hat and put away all smoking and vaping materials before entering the church. The history and iconography here is beyond description. Beautiful and ornate church with no pews or chairs. The member of the church stand throughout the Divine Liturgy which can be 1.5 to 2 hours or longer.

All of the trails from the Herring Cove Trail head are absolutely magical. Beaver Lake is a must-see if you’re coming to Sitka. It’s a bit down the road, but even the ride down was jaw-dropping, with a beautiful view of the mountains over the bay. The trail itself is very well-maintained (thank you Forest Service and Sitka Trail Works!), clear to follow, and surrounded by beautiful scenery (waterfalls, muskeg, mountains, streams, lakes, undergrowth) every step of the way. It is not too steep or challenging, although there are some uphill areas, so you can still get in a good workout.

Hiking this trail filled me with joy and awe at the incredible landscapes of the Tongass. This is a place that needs protection, and even if you don’t get a chance to hike the trail, I’d recommend taking some time to look into supporting the Roadless Rule which keeps the Tongass intact. At the end of our hike, we stopped along the edge of the trail to pick a bountiful harvest of salmonberries and twisted stock leaves. Already made a tasty ice cream and pesto out of each ingredient, respectively. Definitely worth a stop!

This location is an easy side-visit to view the town from up high. The climb was easy and wheelchair accessible with beautiful wildflowers along the way. We thought there would be more, given the name.

Well worth the effort….Found this place but not easy as 1. It has changed name and is now the Harbor Mountain Brewing company. Also 2. Tripadvisor map puts it slightly in the wrong place. You can find it on the main road just behind the service station at saw mill creek road.
Greeted by super helpful staff helping us select a few flights of beer. Tried various lagers, IPAs and stouts all excellent and of course all brewed on the premises. Also bonus is there is a separate company sharing premises that serves amazing pizzas - Campfire. Great pizza oven and pizza selections. Highly recommended

So many cool sea creatures and you even get to interact with some! The kids loved it!! They even had a scavenger hunt for the kids! We went in the hatchery tour that the adults found interesting, but with the rain we couldn't keep the kids attention and had to leave early. It was such a cool place.

I'm not exactly sure I'm placing this review at the right spot, but basically at the current end of the road north (the road is being expanded as I right this but isn't open yet) there is a nice boardwalk around the estuary and then on the ocean side of the highway there is a few campsites and the Mosquito Cove trailhead. I highly recommend this hike! It's about 1.5 miles total if you do the loop, and there is a bit of up and down so take that into consideration, but if you're in decent shape you should be fine. There is usually posted notices of bear activity in the area, so a can of bear spray should probably be carried as a precaution. But the forest is amazing and the trail if well maintained.

Our last stop on our excursion was to watch Tlingit dancing at this venue. The dancers shared information about their culture and demonstrated some of the dances/stories common to their people. We enjoyed this thoroughly. Learned a lot and the show was very well done. The very young dancers were especially impressive!

We did this Heart Lake Trail through Sitka Bike and Hike as an excursion offered by our Princess cruise. From downtown Sitka, it’s a 12min van ride to the bike pick up. Bikes were in terrific condition and we were offered helmets, rain parkas, and rain pants. Then we were riding along the ocean, and stopped at a steep staircase with beautiful views. The hike was through moss covered trees and we saw a lovely waterfall. We hiked past the gorgeous Thimbleberry Lake, and learned all things Alaska from our energetic great guides: Kyle and Mitchell. Even though it rained the entire 3 hours, it still was a fun experience.

If you are particular and looking for quality hand made items for yourself or to bring home from an amazing Alaska adventure then Island Artists is the place to go. It is filled with a unique array from jewelry to photography and so much more.. Our favorite (bought many) are the hand made wooden pend made by Jay Sweeney. It's difficult to find gifts for men and these are perfect and reasonable for the work it involves. Hand painted scarves, glass work wood bowls are all done by Alaska artists. It's a bit off the center of Sitka but still in the downtown 2 blocks. If you're not looking for typical touristy stuff, you won't be disappointed here. The first place we go shopping in Sitka.
