What travelers are saying
- JonArlington, VA1 contributionThis museum was such great value for what is offered. There's SUCH diverse installations with art spanning so many different millenia which I found very cool. Very easy to navigate and it's quiet, peaceful and extremely insightful. Perfect sized museum - not overwhelming and easy to briefly hit on everything and spend time wherever you want. Near many other attractions, too!Written October 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Ramsey FSan Antonio, TX79 contributionsIt just feels Ivy League. So beautiful and well organized. Loved sitting on a bench watching all the activity passing by.Written October 19, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - NickRound Lake, IL127 contributionsI often rely on other Trip Advisor reviews to find cool, out of the way things to do. That’s how I found the Athenaeum. Don’t short change yourself with a short visit - take some time to explore the depths this amazing library offers. There is a lovely reading room downstairs if you have extra time to spare. Parking is a challenge, so take a ride share if you’re able.Written November 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Laurel W22 contributionsCool looking historic homes up on a hill overlooking the city. Driving can be a bit tight with the 2 way streets that only have ONE lane…. Lots of alleyways and restored homes. Worth a look and also seating at Prospect Terrace overlooking the cityWritten October 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mitchell B2 contributionsThis is a beautiful American Victorian Mansion. Its interiors are exceptional and unique. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly answering questions throughout our tour. A wonderful experience!Written October 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Grover RPensacola, FL22,409 contributionsThis is one of many beautiful colonial homes that you can see either driving or walking the historic Providence neighborhood of College Hill. However, this maroon, wood home belongs to one of the most prominent Rhode Islanders not named Williams or Brown. It is available to tour but not on a holiday like our Labor Day visit. However, our group enjoyed seeing the house and learning about Stephen Hopkins who was a multi-term colonial Governor, the state's Chief Justice and a signor of the Declaration of Independence. I highly encourage you to at least see the house and beautiful grounds.Written September 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DMSMD64Chester Springs, PA468 contributionsIt’s the main avenue of a college town. There are numerous restaurants along the way. The Brown University book store is on Thayer street as is an eclectic movie theater, the Avon Cinema. This is one of bright spots of the city of Providence. Always an entertaining spot to people watch. Parking can be challenging as there is only street parking available.Written October 12, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - sotmsNew York City, NY286 contributionsCute but very small park to take in the view of Providence. Trees block some views. Parking is not super easy to find by doable.Written April 28, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Rose P142 contributionsIt was an interesting experience. Got to learn a lot about John Browns and his family. The only bad thing was I didn't get to take a lot of pictures because I was busy listening to the audio tour and it was also a bit dark.Written August 1, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kyle JenningsNorth Attleboro, MA120 contributionsEverything about the Avon Cinema is like it would have been decades ago. The historic looking marquee announcing only a few movies showing due to only having one screen. The theater doesn't have any of the frills you may be used to seeing in theaters and that is quite all right. The picture and sound are just like every other theater you have been in. The ad transitions before the movie in between the movie trailers were quite the blast from the past.Written February 10, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lou PKansas City, KS357 contributionsLovely wooded oasis in downtown Providence. The placards tell about the importance of this spot and man. Well maintained, free parking. The day we were there, the visitor center was closed and there were no brochures available. We enjoyed walking around the park, but there wasn't a whole lot of information out there.Written June 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mike GProvidence, RI5,554 contributionsIn the lower gallery. This is a solo show by Mary Dondero and her work is well worth seeing . The upstairs show is a juried member show that also has quality works. - Grover RPensacola, FL22,409 contributionsWhile the Baptist denomination did not start in the colonies of the US, its major source of members today is the US and nearly every city has a First Baptist of that city so only fitting to have a First Baptist of America. Now, some of the sources I have seen argue whether the Williams Providence church or the Clarke Newport church was first, but it is definitely evident the first was Rhode Island.
Unfortunately, on our Labor Day visit, the church was closed, but we did get to see the exterior. The congregation was founded by Williams in 1638 only 2 years after Williams was banished from Massachusetts and founded Providence and 30 years after the beginning of the Baptist denomination. However, the current church was built in 1775 and renovated in 1957 by the Rockefeller family, a big Baptist family, back to its early appearance. While the church is Baptist fashion, very plain and white, it was an anomaly for the denomination. First was size as when constructed on the eve of the Revolutionary War in 1774-75, it was the largest building in New England. Second it had a steeple like Anglican churches, prior to this church, no Baptist church had a steeple, yet it was still fairly plain in its presentation.
Even today when we visited with one Baptist in our party, the church is notable for its size and simplistic beauty. Every Baptist church in this country north or south traces its roots to this church and it is that significance that makes this something to see when you come to Rhode Island.Written September 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The buildings are spread out over a hill and downtown but it’s nice so you get to see a lot of providence. The food is good too especially at the met and the Fleet Library is gorgeous if you can come in. I loved my time at RISD!Written June 10, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jennifer H2 contributionsWe visited the toy soldiers area. Amazing! My husband described it as that "a toy soldiers display" . It was an enormous collection of miniature people and animals in military dress, formation etc. Huge collection marking the birth of humanity until today.Written May 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
