Pinnacles Track Wellington, New Zealand 25.4 mi away
#7 of 79 Outdoor Activities in Wellington
Once you get to the lookout it's a short walk down hill to the base of the pinnacles and the river (which is the lower trail) it was so much fun walking on the rocks and jumping over the streams forming everywhere.
There are a range of track options up to the Pinnacles, the easiest one up the valley is less than an hour round-trip, but you'll be rewarded with the most amazing natural features - caused when the soft rock erod...

There's also a 50-minute loop trail through mature kohekohe trees, one of the more unusual NZ species, with sprays of white flowers growing in season directly out of trunks and branches.
You need to be up for an adventure so bring a bottle of water and a snack bar, some good walking shoes, a camera and a wind jacket and choose the weather carefully - avoid wet or windy days.

The scenic walk from the Car Park to the bottom of the glacier is the easiest track (well maintained path), and has many facets of looks, such as waterfalls, streams, rich and vivid flora & fauna.

This was a very varied walk, moving through thick, indigenous rainforest, across swing-bridges and rivers, ending with the most magnificent view of Franz Josef glacier from an elevated platform .

You feel so tiny walking along the valley floor, it gives you great perspective on how the glaciers carved and formed the earth around you.

You want to make sure you bring a flashlight (or, in our case, a phone light), and some waterproof shoes as it's pitch black and very wet in the tunnel.
Bring waterproof shoes and a headlamp for the tunnel.

Easy walk to the glacier and spectacular views, especially for those of us who were geography students and still get a kick out of seeing the landscape evolving in real time (slowly!)
It does take approximately an hour return, and can be tricky walking on rocks and crossing small rivers, and the steep climb at the end isn’t easy, but it is utterly worth it!

If you wish to have time and energy to walk the wonderful trails around the hills and lakes near the lighthouse then I recommend the excellent tour offered periodically by the Parks Department as they have access...
... and sparkling harbor waters, then cut to a walk and ascend a short, steep trail or a longer, more gently rising "back door" trail to take in the extraordinary panorama at the 1859 lighthouse atop Pencarrow Head.

Very short and easy walk, about 15mins from the car park, it’s a small pool, but we were super lucky been there in very sunny weather and without wind, saw the perfect reflection
Just a ten minute walk on flat paths to this lake\pond with a couple of benches to sit on and drink in the views

Sentinel Rock Walk is somewhat steep but a pleasant walk through the forest accompanied by birdsong, there's a viewing platform at the end of the walk, giving a distant view of the glacier.
This is on a detour from the main glacier valley walk, its a steady climb upslope all the way in and ends off with a small landing where you can view the glacier.

#1 of 1 Outdoor Activities in Greytown
Such a nice gentle ride, only about 5 kms, we started at the quaint, historical Woodside Station which is well worth a visit and rode through farmland and countryside to finish in the charming town of Greytown.
After tasting a fair few chocolates at Schoc, a bike ride along the rail hit the spot.

Lovely scenic bush as you climb to the lookout from Raiha entry point.

Copland Track Fox Glacier
#6 of 9 Outdoor Activities in Fox Glacier
For one thing the track becomes less maintained and the creek crossings can be a bit of a challenge; but the change in scenery from river landscape to mountain scenes is worth the extra effort many times.
Great walk, river crossings, swing bridges, west coast bush - simply amazing.

Saw glow worms from a few minutes up from the trail head all the way to the first river.
Once on the trail, the map said the glow worms can usually be found under old fallen down trees.

It was still quite cool being a winter afternoon but the golden afternoon light amongst the trees was just stunning and the swing bridge was a highlight where I helped some travellers take a photo.
You can also walk up and down the river bed crossing the braids quite easily, although we found it was best to have our boots on when walking with our kids who were only in trainers so that we could walk across wi...
