Dana-Thomas House
#1 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
We found the home to be absolutely gorgeous, inside and out; there are stunning views throughout the tour, thanks to Wright’s artistry and genius in design.
The house is fully decorated by the Springfield Master Gardeners Club every holiday season and the site has a special Lumiere Night every year and it is absolutely worth checking out!
Lincoln Home National Historic Site
#2 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
The Lincoln Home (along with two blocks of other preserved pre-Civil War homes) is well worth a few hours of your time, especially since it is one of the very few National Park sites in Illinois.
The Lincoln Home National Historic Site offers an excellent guided or self guided tour into life in the 1800's and the family of the 16th president.

Lincoln Tomb & War Memorials
#3 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
From it you walk through a side hallway that circles around to let you view the tombs of Lincoln's wife Mary, 3 of their 4 sons (Tad is buried in Arlington, Virginia), & Lincoln's own tomb.
I thought I had had enough learning about Mr. Lincoln from the other local sites we visited, but a true tribute and opportunity to visit his Tomb made our 4 hour tour of Springfield well worth it and the opportuni...
Illinois State Capitol
#4 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
Built shortly after the Civil War, this is the sixth Illinois capitol and the second in Springfield (the previous capitol in Springfield is still here and open as a historic site).
Free tour gives great views of the House, Senate and Executive Wing of the Capitol building as well as photo ops of the rotunda.
Old State Capitol State Historic Site
#5 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
As at all of the other Lincoln sites we visited, the docents were eager to share their knowledge and so pleasant, even with the large school groups, as we listened in on their presentations.
Very well preserved and presented site where President Lincoln served as a state legislator and ultimately lay in state before his burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery after his assassination.

We added this to our Springfield itinerary when looking for something different and beyond the 'usual' Lincoln historical sites in the area.
Parking is free on site and the cost is reasonable at $5.
Camp Butler National Cemetery

If you're taking a trip to Springfield to view and experience its rich history - Camp Butler should be on your list.
Impressive sights - soldiers from many eras.

Nice quick view of the mansion
Rees Memorial Carillon
#11 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
As an added bonus the views are spectacular and include the surrounding Washington Park and gardens .
And the views of Springfield from the outside balconies up there are very nice.
Great Western Depot
#12 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
Our second-favorite of the Lincoln sites after the Lincoln Home (but the Museum was the most informative).
It is still a very important historic site and well worth the half-hour or so needed to tour it.
Elijah Iles House
#13 of 24 Sights & Landmarks in Springfield
My wife and I lucked out in being able to see the Iles house after visiting the Lincoln Home site just two blocks away.
A must see historic site
