What travelers are saying
- Abby DAtlanta, GA39 contributionsNicole, our tour guide was great. My family was here my business association
We parked in the parking lot and went on a walking tour. Nicole was very informative. We were able to see all of the animals on the tour, except the bison. We ended up driving by their exhibit.
At the end, we had the porcupine experience (we had to choose between that and reindeer). It was pretty cool to learn about porcupine.Written June 6, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s all in an urban area so you feel safe. Saw a moose!Written December 4, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Catherine MOrlando, FL64 contributionsMy husband and I took the gondola to the top of the mountain. The views were fantastic. The tickets included $25 vouchers for each of us. The food was a bit overpriced. Most of the offerings were sandwiches and pub food.Written June 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dave Skis9 contributionsThis boat trip was part of a 1/2 day tour that included transport from Anchorage and stopped first at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It was a cold day with sporadic rain but the main level is enclosed and heated (and has bathrooms) so very pleasant. Its on a lake so we didn't notice any boat rocking. The Capitan, Jan, even backed the boat up when a black bear was spotted so everyone could have a better view.Written June 3, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Abby DAtlanta, GA39 contributionsDuring this visit, we started with some personal oral history from a Native Alaskan. She talked about her experiences growing up and her encounter with a bear and how her grandmother saved her family from it. She discussed their clothing and how it evolved when Russians came to Alaska.
Our tour was led by two Native Alaskan women. They walked us though 5 native houses and how they were constructed and the cultures of each.
The most exciting part (or not) was there was a “Code B” - a bear at our next stop. The tour guides led us back to the house and locked the doors. The tour participants were very calm and so were the guides. The staff scared off the bear; however, there was a brave tourist that got some footage of the bear. Honestly, it was pretty cool and I felt really safe.
We resumed the tour as normal.
It was a very informative tour. I would also like to shout out our very awesome tour guides. Our lead tour guide (I cannot recall her name) was of the Haida people, from Barrow, did a very good job leading her first tour and keeping us safe. She was assisted by Jasmine.

- ImmerWandernPalos Heights, IL7,249 contributionsGetting here was an easy drive from the city. The parking lot was fairly full but we were able to find a spot fairly quickly. We first went to the overlook a short stroll from the parking lot. We had a great view of the city and Cook Inlet but Denali was hidden from sight. There were several birds flying around, probably feeding on the berries. The Canada Jay was a new one for us.
We set out at the Glen Alps trailhead. The ascent took us up past krummholz, pine trees so exposed to wind and rough weather that they grew not in an upright fashion but in twisted and distorted manner, close to the ground the meadows were turning red w/ early fall. We occasionally find blueberries but the areas near the trail had already been picked over. We ran into a local who showed us her tooth-edged berry scooper as well as several plastic containers filled with the efforts of the labor that morning. We spotted numerous alpine ground squirrels all in agitated and standing upright and alert. The reason for their anxiety was soon clear as we spotted a Northern Goshawk on the ground; we never did spot it fly at any of the squirrels. However we did see a couple hiking with their dog allow it to run free onto the meadow at the squirrels. We did not spot any moose.
We elected not to climb Flattop once we reached the junction in the trail; the rock scramble seemed too difficult. We thus stayed on Blueberry Loop, went around to the south where we had a good view of the start of Turnagain Arm. Wildflowers were still blooming in places. Fireweed, of course, but also Purple larkspur/monks hood, red and yellow Indian paintbrush and yarrow. In addition to blueberries there were lingonberries and crowberries.Written September 9, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It must have been fate because we actually had a better view of Denali than we would have got on the NP bus tour (it only goes to mile 43 now because of a rock slide).
We upgraded to the Gold Star (1st Class car) and it was well worth it to us. Wonderful viewing opportunities, breakfast/lunch, 2 cocktails each included.
EVERYTHING was just great. Even the bathrooms were huge and super clean, not like on a plane.
We were told that only 30% get to view Denali and we were lucky enough to be in that %.Written May 23, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ladonnablakeSmithville, OK17 contributionsWe stopped in to hike and were greeted by friendly staff. The little visitors center has a lot packed into a small place. There are different furs and animal artifacts that are touchable as well as other useful information. There are comfortable chairs to just rest in the warm building for a while. The bathrooms were large and clean. They offered helpful advice an which trails would meet our needs. The trails were groomed and although the snow packed trail had about 2 ft of snow it was easily navigated. The views are spectacular!!Written March 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- BrandonPittsburgh, PA372 contributionsWe got to watch the 2023 ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage. It's a great way to be able to experience the grandeur of the event. - Sandra WBuford, Georgia21 contributionsA beautiful glacier with a large snowfield at the base. The trail was fairly easy and busy. The climb up the snowbank did not provide extra views beyond what can be seen at the bench area. If climbing the snowfield, proper shoes are very helpful.Written June 4, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
