Manini'owali Beach (Kua Bay)
#52 of 255 Outdoor Activities in Kailua-Kona
With so few big beaches on the island of Hawaii Kua Bay is everything we need to swim, surf, and take walks in the sand and still have high quality lifeguards and facilities.
Having lived in Southern California for most of my life and growing up going to Huntington and Newport Beaches, I like to think I have enjoyed some incredible beaches.

An oasis of peace and tranquility with white sandy beaches and wonderfull turtels on the beach.
On our second and third visits to that area, we opted to stay at the Kekaka Hai beach area, which has a couple of beautiful beaches, many turtles, some shade and good swimming.
White Sand Beach

Looking for place to take our 2 year old granddaughter.....Not many white sand beaches on Kona but this one is a must...bring plenty of sunscreen and umbrella to shade yourself.
Lava rocks or sand this is one of our favorite easy access beaches on the big island!
Magic Sands
#76 of 255 Outdoor Activities in Kailua-Kona
Magic Sands is one of the best Kona Beaches, suitable for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, even snorkeling and scuba diving.
on the big island of Hawaii there aren't too many great beaches especially on the west side near Kona.
Mahai'ula Beach

There are actually 3 beaches you can access by taking the exit to Kekaha Kai State Park off of HWY 11 going North past the Kailua Kona airport.
One of my favorite beaches we visited during our trip to the big island.

The beach was a good mix of coral sand and rocks, so you can get your toes in the sand and water and you can see great splashes as surf hits the rocks.

Kahaluu Beach Keauhou 4.6 mi away
#4 of 5 Outdoor Activities in Keauhou
Even though the water is a bit rough at other beaches along the west coast at this time of year, the breakwater makes this little bay nice and calm for snorkelling.
Like most of the beaches on the Big Island, it was awesome!

This little beach park was recommended to us and turned out to be the perfect spot to explore for an hour.
Really nice little beach.
Kohanaiki Beach Park

There aren't many facilities and you will need to bring everything you need for your own personal beach day.
There is a tiny beach with course, greyish sand otherwise it’s lava.

Kukio Beach

The only drawback is that like all the best beaches on the Big Island, you have to go through a gated pass area to obtain a parking pass.

Given the other reviews, I agree this beach is too small for spending a ton of time, but I must say I have to give it credit as it made for a picturesque sunset when we were in the area.
