It had been several years, since we had stayed on Canal St in New Orleans, but my wife was attending a symposium at the Sheraton Hotel, so we were spending more time on Canal St, than usual. We set out on a beautiful December Monday, to head to the back of the French Quarter, and to a “Champagne shop,” on Rampart St. As it had been quite a while, since we walked the area, we detoured around Rampart St, to Basin St, and then a bit of a zig zag through “Storyville” and finally back to the French Quarter.
I had forgotten about the statue to the Venezuelan military leader, Simon Bolivar, right at Basin St and Canal. What I also was unaware of, was that this was the 60th anniversary of the dedication of that statue. Unfortunately, our trip was just about two weeks late.
The statue is very nice, with a planted area around part of the base. Also, more than just a tribute to a South American military leader, it signifies the strong trade ties between the City of New Orleans, and all of South America, not just Venezuela.
It appeared that some renovation had been done on the statue – probably for the 60th anniversary? – as it looked to be in better condition, than I recalled from when we lived in the City.
Definitely worth a stop, and considering the renovations and re-purposing of so much of that area of Canal and Basin Streets, it’s also a good vantage point, to take it all in. After about 20 mins, we were off to Storyville, Rampart St and Champagne – only to find the Champagne shop closed on Monday!
