- SS_ForeverDallas, TX302 contributionsMany of the other squares you can drive around as they are small this one is much larger and in a quieter neighborhood. The fountain and grounds around it are beautiful.
They have bench's all around and a great place for a picnic.Written August 11, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Short video presentation is informative. Lots of interesting facts about early Georgia. Nice museum and gift shop. Then a couple of short trails to the historic site itself. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.. Just a short drive from downtown Savannah... Don't miss it.Written August 12, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

1. Bottom Line Up Front/frame of reference for my remarks. I am very glad that I came across this facility on my way to Fort Pulaski (I saw their sign on Islands Expressway); it is a hidden jewel and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone.
2. Details of my visit
2.a. Date & Time. Thursday 11 Aug 2022 (12:00 pm).
2.b. Other patrons. During my visit, there were approximately 15 other visitors (groups of 2-5 adults and children).
2.c. Length of visit. I was at the museum for 1 1/2 hours. I read all informative placards and took my time.
3. Location. 711 Sandtown Rd Savannah, GA (it is accurate).
4. Access
4.a. Passenger vehicles. The parking lot can be accessed by any type of passenger vehicle.
4.b. RVs. I consider the parking lot to be accessible to these vehicles; I recommend looking at the site on Bing or Google Maps to confirm.
5. Parking. No charge; the parking lot is unpaved (grass and dirt) but the road leading to it is paved.
6. Admission. Check the museum’s website for current information (use the tab on the green bar marked "visit"). The prices are extremely reasonable.
7. Hours of operation. Check the museum’s website for current information. (use the tab on the green bar marked "visit").
8. Handicap access. I consider the facility to be handicap accessible. The dirt trail that connects the animal enclosures is flat and well-maintained. There are benches distributed along the trail.

12. Layout of facility. The facility consists of approximately 100 acres; it was constructed in 1927 as a retirement home for railroad conductors. The animal enclosures are situated along a 1.5 mile dirt trail; the enclosures are large and separated from each other by approximately 100 yards. In addition to the dirt trails, there are elevated walkways that prevent visitors from negotiating muddy areas. Additionally, there are at least two covered seating areas along the trail that provide shelter in the event of a sudden rainstorm. Lastly, the trail is surrounded by large trees that provide a great deal of shade,

The cathedral of St. John the Baptist is just on the corner. We chilled on a bench for a while. - Bob SCincinnati, OH2,436 contributionsA quieter setting than Harbour Town. Much smaller with fewer stores and attractions. Home of the Salty Dog restaurant. Better for those looking for a quieter alternative.Written May 10, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Elaine MPenn Run, PA707 contributionsPrice was right, 5 dollars. Iris snd Orchid displays worth the price of admission. Too early for strawberry picking. Unhappy that we could not visit shade gardens due to bridge being out. Also water garden was empty.Written April 30, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- HikingFoolCincinnatiCincinnati373 contributionsWe didn't expect much from Harris Neck which was originally developed as an army Airfield for WWII but we were very surprised when we started walking on the trail to Bluebill and then Woody Pond. The 1st thing we saw was an 8 ft alligator. It then swam to an area with a 12'+ gator who started bellowing at it. The little guy held his ground until Big Daddy slow amber off to another spot. That was a Marlin Perkins moment (Google it for you youngsters). Then our attention was drawn by a pair of Anhingas who had perched on 2 logs near the shore. Then a Great Blue Heron flew in about 6' away from us. Walking a little further we saw 7 more gators and over a hundred wood storks nesting in the trees. Finally, we saw an Osprey sail over the lake and perch in a tree. We saw this all within an hour of walking and gawking! - Grover RPensacola, FL16,286 contributionsOne of the things you come to see in Savannah is the oak lined parks. While there are many more famous and important squares, Emmet Park is one you will probably see if you stay around or walk the waterfront. It is right on Bay Street and a beautiful park near the river. It is a great inland diversion to a river walk.Written May 4, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- 09mrmarshall .55 contributionsStarted coming here because my dogs need somewhere to run and play when I get off work, and this park has quickly turned into one of my favorite places in the city. The dog park in particular is well maintained, completely shaded, and usually filled with friendly pets and owners. The only downside is that parking can be limited during peak times, but that’s true for anywhere in Savannah.
Highly recommended as a place to go for a distance run (it has a paved mile long track) or to take the dogs for some exercise!Written July 27, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's notable for live music at many times and there is a fountain. `it's not the most beautiful square, but it may be the most lively.Written December 19, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael S3 contributionsThis garden is excellent for an hour or two self guided tour. We came across several volunteers working with the plants that were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the garden. Yes, some of the displays and walkways needed attention but none of them were overtaken with weeds, and if you've ever had a garden you know "weed free" is not realistic. We were here in early August (HOT) and the roses were already spent but there were many many other plants that were still blooming and beautiful. The girls loved the children's garden and now I have to go home and make a flower "bed". Pretty cute. The admission is free but be sure to donate what you can. - OBX717Florida1,286 contributionsWe stopped here to have a picnic under a nice shade tree. Beautiful lake with wildlife and people out and about excercising and just enjoying the beautiful weather. - stevenelson2019Atlanta, GA2 contributionsBlackbeard Island is one of those rare natural places that is worth the effort to visit. I have been there for one of the organized hunts to control the deer and hog population. We had a fantastic time.Written February 11, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Estrella VPort Saint Lucie, FL28 contributionsIt was the first time we went and they had a section for little kids and the rest for older kids and adults. They had employees dressed as referees and they made sure that everyone was in their corresponding areas. They made sure everyone stayed safe. My son had a blast and so did we. Bathrooms weren't the best. But fun.Written April 30, 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
