Definitely a tourist activity that is a must do in NYC if you know the show Friends. Of course, it is just a facade and not their “real” apartment, but fun to see.

Pier 45 is a very long pier with a great view of the skyline. There weren’t many people there when I went, and it can be quite windy, but there is a great view of New Jersey as well as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

I found the museum really informative and also really sad reading about what some of the LGBTQ community heads had to endure.

This neglected building stands on the corner between Christopher St and Grove St. In this area of high priced property, it seemed remarkable that a building of such size could be left empty and forlorn. I knew from my guide book that it had been built as a dispensary to care for the poor but as I was intrigued to know more, I did a bit more research. Apparently, the dispensary had to close after incurring legal debts arising from being sued for their refusal to treat a person with Aids. The building was later sold to a property acquirer William Gottlieb and since his death has been owned by his descendants. The deeds impose tight restrictions on further use and so the property remains empty. A proposal to open it as a resource for homeless people has been thwarted which seems a shame given current need and the intentions of the original owners. I think I will check  on any future progress as it has whetted my appetite to follow the story.

I don't know how many times I walked past this statue before I finally Googled Giuseppe Garibaldi. I read a very good summary on Untapped, which I recommend, of why he is honored in the US. However, after doing the research, this statue's location seems rather odd. It should really be in Staten Island.

Father Demo Square is a fairly standard public space with a fountain and some parks. It's a good meeting spot since it is well known and in a good location. However, it doesn't appear to have the same TLC as other spots, especially with the always well-kept Washington Square Park so close.
