Took the ferry out to the island, are given times to depart to the island and you can pick a time to be picked up. The ferry we took came back every hour. Ferry was about a 20 minute ride- beware there is sea spray as the ferry enters an area where it can go faster. Island is huge and has an atlantic side and sound side. Tons of shells to get, and the interior is where the horses hang out. They are standoffish which is fine. Definitely a must go if you enjoy hiking in nature.

This was a bucket list trip for my wife and I that we have put off too long. There is shade and an air-conditioned gift shop, which was much needed the day we went. It was very hot and humid. Nice wooden walkway to the lighthouse. Clean restrooms. Nice beach by the boat dock, but we didn't go to the ocean side. A must if you are in the area.

We visited Cape Lookout on a beautiful sunny day. To get there, we took a ferry travelling past some sandy barrier islands, including Shackleford bank with the horses descended from those left by wrecked Spanish galleons hundreds of years ago. The lighthouse dominates Point Lookout and there is a museum nearby, staffed by very helpful, enthusiastic volunteers who live above the museum. The island is a peaceful and beautiful place to visit.

We were greeted by a very knowledgeable lady who was a local resident. She has a passion to share her heritage on the island with others. The museum was full of many decoys and antiques. It’s easily accessible on all 3 floors, with your choice of stairs or an elevator. The top floor tower has a breathtaking scenic view. There is also a nice gift shop next to the front entrance. This is a great way so spend some quiet time at Harker’s Island!

Stopped in to use the restroom before taking the ferry over to the lighthouse. Had time to kill. Everything was clean. Purchased some tourist trinkets and the clerk was very friendly and nice. Displays on history were informative.

If you like to fish and find yourself in or near Harkers Island, NC, you should check out Straits Fishing Pier. We caught crabs, bluefish, and pufferfish. We saw a shark swimming below the pier. There were plenty of birds to watch as well. What a fun day.

If you go, have your fishing license and your fishing gear with you. Wear sunscreen, pack a lunch and bring your camera and plenty of water.
