The USS Midway Museum was an unexpected surprise. I went reluctantly, but really enjoyed every second of it.

With some museums, you walk around a big building and read signs next to an artifact or two, but with this museum you walk through the historical ships. Ships range from steam powered to old sailing vessels and it gives an excellent sense of history.

We weren't sure what to expect but were blown away by the experience.
Most of the planes are from actual conflicts. There is a lot of great info about women and their contribution to aviation history. Their is a lot of memorabilia and ephemera that would not ordinarily be preserved.
There is an eight minute 4D movie which puts you in the cockpit of a moon rocket. It is very realistic!
    We highly recommend this Museum.

A work-in-progress (aren't all layouts?) - this is a must for train fans of all ages. They display several gauge trains - O, HO and more - professionally done and absolutely wonderful to see. This is one of the best model train museums I have ever seen - so reaslistic looking and extremely well laid-out!

Wonderful presentation, free, and by appointment, of a private collection of maps and atlases. Many examples of world maps, early US maps, the Caribbean, Asia, etc., as well as pictorial maps. Well worth at least an hour.

I recommend you sign up for a tour so you can learn the stories behind these outdoor art installations. James de Silva established the collection and enticed world renown artists to participate. Thought provoking and very interesting...something for everyone. UC San Diego is currently undergoing a major building expansion so do sign up for a guide to traverse the construction maze.

The Old Town Model Railroad Depot is worth your time when visiting San Diego’s Old Town. The Old Town Trolley Tour begins and ends its tours (Stop A) in Old Town so there are multiple opportunities to stop by and visit, and admission is included if you are already on the trolley tour. The train display is of trains meandering through any town USA with nostalgic references throughout the display. The diorama is divided in two sections, where one room has trains travelling through the day and the second has the same trains travelling through the night. The buildings and landscaping are constructed with great detail providing you with wonderful visual experience. The staff is friendly, informative and welcoming. It appears that the entire operation is created and managed by model train enthusiasts who want to share what they have created. The self-guided tour can be as quick or slow as you wish with steps up providing views at many levels and perspectives. Photography is allowed and a small wall of train themed items are available for purchase. The visit to the Old Town Model Railroad Depot will not take much of your time but could be one of the fun memories of your visit to San Diego’s Old Town.

It’s a nice collection of Marine Corp. Aircraft and vehicles. The staff is super friendly too! Unfortunately this place may be closing soon. Sign the online petition by scanning the barcode in my pictures. Thanks!

The Timken Museum of Art is a great museum for anyone who enjoys art. Although small in size, there are beautiful pieces in the collection. It was free at the time we went and worth a visit while at Balboa Park.

If you are into cars/motorcycles, this is a nice way to spend about an hour. Small but well kept collection. I had never heard of "Louie Mattar's Fabulous $75,000 Car. It was worth the look.

Sweet little museum worth the visit. Small but packs a punch. You can have your pictures taken in jail, mug shot and sit in court as the judge upstairs. Loved the log from the 1800’s showing the arrests made over a few days. Such an interesting view back in the day! Ex cops inside are super friendly. Make sure you get there at least 45 mins before they close as you will want at least an hour to Browse and they close the entrance about 30 mins before to allow people to finish. Kid will LOVE it and adults too, very nicely done

We really enjoyed walking through and browsing the incredible information and evolution of horse-drawn transportation. I never knew there were tandem carriages! This was a very interesting excursion if you’re in Old Town. And it’s free!
