It was beautifully restored after the earthquake. They spent a lot of money and it shows. The classic interior architecture is something to be experienced especially for a special event like a speech or reception. But this is also a working city hall and where we have had to go to get copies of our marriage certificate. There is security.

Many people know about Ellis Island, but the Angel Island Immigration Station is not as well known. This site processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants from 1910-1940. Due to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, many of the Chinese immigrants who came to this station were unfortunately subject to grueling interrogations and lengthy detentions.
To get to the immigration station from the ferry dock at Ayala Cove, one can walk uphill 1-1.5 miles (depending on the trail). Alternatively, there is also a shuttle available, but it runs on a very limited schedule. We took the 10:30 am shuttle (which we had prepaid online) from Ayala cove. The shuttle brought us directly to the immigration station which opened at 11am. We were able to take a guided tour (7$/person) which began outside by the large fog bell and later went inside the detention barracks. The excellent tour was led by long time volunteer Joe.
There are over 200 poems etched into the walls of the barracks by detainees. This was sobering to see. The poems are beautiful, haunting, and sad.
This is a somber, dark part of American history.

It's closed to tours, but the outside is very cool, you can walk around it. There are some nice spots around to sit and enjoy, including sitting down with a coffee.

This is the classic old bank building located in the heart of the Financial District. The Bank has since moved to a more modern building on Market Street where they welcome visits. This old building has a classic Greek Revival style.

This massive government building towers over the Upper Market and Duboce neighborhoods. You can't miss it. Friends of my parents used to live in this area. The Mint has long provided good jobs to those who live in the area.

This new government building had serious flaws from the day it opened. Folks were hopeful that it would help turn this poor neighborhood around, but that did not happen until lots of new luxury apartments were built. Not very distinguished architecture.

This is basically the jail for the city and the location of some of the courts. People come here for jury duty or if they are in trouble. Part of the building is very modern, and it can be found along the elevated freeway leading to the Bay Bridge. Not especially pretty.

Classic design for a federal office building, this time housing a very important court that affects all of the US. On a very busy street with traffic coming from South of Market and headed into the downtown and Nob Hill. You will probably drive quickly by and hardly notice it, but it is grand.

It's an old government building right in the middle of the Financial District, almost to Jackson Square. Pleasant to see some old architecture in a sea of modern skyscrapers. I came here for some assistance many years ago and remember a classic old fashione interior. Today just a walk by on the way to the Square.

I was on a hop on hop off tour of San Franisco. The tour guide, who was quite amusing to listen to, described the United States Federal Office Building as the ugliest building in San Francisco. It is in the civic center area.

This stately building is an important part of the Civic Center area. The architecture is harmonious with City Hall and the old Opera House. The building itself includes a lovely theater that is used for many different functions, including concerts. It's surprisingly intimate.

We went to talk to some people while we were at the Presidio area of San Francisco.
The Presidio Trust is a federal agency created to save the Presidio and transform it for a new national purpose.
