What travelers are saying
- jender13Hackensack, NJ65 contributionsThere is so much to do. Hiking, kayaking, trying out different restaurants. Many of the hikes are near the ocean. Bar Harbor is a great place to shop. - RICART75Peru, IN2,456 contributionsStaying in Southwest Harbor, we spent a week exploring the Island; Acadia, the Harbor towns, and much of the amazing natural wonder of this area (we did separateTA reviews on several of these).
Being early May, tourist traffic was not yet daunting; allowing for easy travel, comfortable access to attractions, and ready seating at eateries. It also allowed for the opportunity to engage with some local inhabitants; before the "season" chaos overwhelmed their ability to leisurely converse.
The beauty of the Island is truly impressive; and we look forward to future visits.Written June 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is awesome walking on the rocks with the waves coming in. Great for a picnic, or to get lost in your thoughts.Written September 16, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RICART75Peru, IN2,456 contributionsThough we drove along, more than we hiked this walkway; this is still a wonderful option to explore.
We did experience some sections by foot, around Sandy Beach and Thunder Hole.
Being early May, these areas had a fair amount of visitors; but nothing like what we hear occurs in "season". Parking was full, but not unobtainable; and the Trail was busy, but not impassable.
In any case, the views are spectacular; and allows one to understand the power and impact of the Island's coastline.Written June 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. On the corner of Bar Harbor Path and Village Route we noticed the small sign and decided to take a look. We didn’t understand why people were running past us as if they were late for something until we saw the tide going out and the warning signs of getting stranded on the island. Guess you do need to be on time for the glimmer of the Sandbar/ Land Bridge to cross to the island. I never been to a beach that was all rocks, but it was beautiful as the sun was setting and the tide was going out revealing the rocky beauty hidden beneath the waters. Ended up just exploring the Sandbar as it was exposed and never crossed over to the island. Great way to start the vacation of the area. Beautiful views.
Not crowded on the Sandbar. No public restrooms visible in this area. Did street parking, kiosk every so often to pay for street parking/ credit card. Streets are narrow and parking is limited in the immediate area.Written November 4, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It goes on to say it exists and is open to the public due to cooperation and generosity of the property owners and the village, wow again. It’s a beautiful walk along the coast and past the Inn. We walked up to where it was closed for repairs, but we were going to turn there anyway to loop back into town. We had perfect weather and really enjoyed it!Written September 17, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dlenane78Rochester, NH615 contributionsBeautiful scenery. Did not hear the “thunder” as it was very crowded and lots of chatter. But the view was beautiful and would recommend.Written September 23, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Have Camera, Will TravelSouth Bend, IN3,807 contributionsIt's a beautiful area. The boats, the islands, the fall colors. It was all fantastic. This is why you come to Bar Harbor. Take some time and sit at the park and just take in the bay.Written November 18, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Passport1448848154416 contributionsThis was a moderate hike. Nothing frightening but lots of uphill, rocks , shale slopes. It took us 2 hours up and 1 1/2 down going total elevation of 1500 feet. A jacket, water and snacks were helpful. The bus will drop you off at the trailhead going up, but no bus at the top…. There is a small gift shop with bathroom, drinks, and snacks at the top. The view is incredible. We didn’t know how hard it is to reserve sunset parking there, so plan ahead. Brave people hike up at 4:30 am, but I can’t imagine hiking this trail in the dark!! You do hear some road noise from the trail, but the scenery distracts from thatWritten September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Leilah29 contributionsGreat selection of gifts to bring back home! We got some stickers and ornaments that were reasonable priced with nice staff. - lesmark2016San Diego, CA18 contributionsWe would recommend this flat hike of 6 miles to anyone looking for a quiet forested walk on a relatively smooth surface. After hiking the climbs in Acadia National Park and with the crowds on the Jordan Pond hike we were so glad we chose this carriage road walk. We were refreshed after our almost 2-hour loop. We only saw a few hikers and e-bikers, but lots of lovely lake views.Written October 26, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - redecoWarren, MA9,443 contributionsWe visited Egg Island as part of a Nature Cruise...saw Harbor Seals sunning themselves and many nesting birds. Two Harbor Porpoises swam by while we were there as well.
The island is at the mouth of the Harbor with Atlantic Ocean beyond. It's remote and a refuge for the many animals and birds who live there. A beautiful spot. I recommend a cruise out there...Enjoy!Written June 9, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
