I came to enjoy a visit with my daughter but was told I could not pay with cash. What the heck is this about? Local families are often using cash rather than credit cards. This facility is obviously here for tourists not for locals. Shane on you!!!

Enjoyed lunch at the Mill House and the Tour of Maui Plantation. Very educational. It was great to see citrus and avocado trees and learn about them.

Iao Valley State Monument is just a short drive from Wailuku, and is this lovely green valley, full of the Islands’ ancient history and traditions. There are lots of sign boards located around to starting point that talk about the Iao valley's history, but it is a very popular stop-off point with tour bus companies.
Be aware that it is a steep climb from the car park, up to a covered wooden deck that gives a great view of the Lush Mountain valley, and it’s 1,200-ft. needle-shaped peak. There are 135 steps to be exact and for the not-so-young, could be a challenge, and is definitely not Pushchair friendly.
But if you are in a group and do not feel like climbing, take the path down to the river on the left of the bridge, where there are places to sit down or just continue to underneath the bridge, it's cooler and less popular, and you can soak your feet in freshwater while waiting for your group to return hot and sweaty.
We would recommend that if you have a choice, you go there as early as you can in the morning to avoid the tour buses, especially if there is a cruise ship in port.
Restrooms here so so, suggest that you wait till you visit the Kepaniwai heritage gardens just down the road on the way home.

TIP: Parking is free on road just outside Iao Valley State Monument, or $ 10 in the Monument car park.

Mendes Ranch was top notch. The horse were well taken care of and well mannered. We felt safe the entire time and the views were awesome.

This museum is small (a former home), but is jam packed with historical artifacts of Maui's past. Hopefully a docent is there to assist with providing additional background. Paul was our host, and shared a lot about the history of Maui. There was a fascinating room dedicated to clothing fashion and influence through the ages, and it's well worth reading the placards on the wall, for the occasional snarky jab at the portrayals and stereotyping through Hollywood movies and influence. You really get a sense of the melting pot that is Hawaii's past as a trading hub of the pacific!

Paul's experience as a sailor on a round the world trip on a replica Hawaiian double-hulled catamaran, helped to liven up the information about the model there.

He was also very informative on other attractions to see in the area, and I imagine many of the docents are similarly knowledgeable, as they are passionate volunteers here. He recommended the Haleaka crater and the Iao valley state park (seen in exquisite paintings on the walls!)

There are examples of snail collections - a past owners' expertise in tree snails (including published, authoritative books), and the missionary service performed. There was an emphasis on education by past owners, and their dedication to lifting the essential skills of a soon-to-be "invaded" people by fast-changing cultural and political influences.

It's a wonderful museum for learning about the cultural background of the Maui island!

    Utilize the amazing docents!

Had the opportunity to stop by the park and get and out walk in the afternoon. The clouds were forming around the peaks and offered a refreshing and majestic ambiance. The setting is peaceful and a pleasant place to spend some time.

Did a walkabout of this historic neighborhood and came across this old theater. It is now used as a performing arts center and is quite nice. It has a great history that includes Bob Hope doing USO shows there in WW2.

Not being a local, but having been to my fair share of street festivals, when our friends who live in Maui asked us to attend First Friday, we were game. I’m glad we took them up on the offer as we had a good time. I know where I’m from we tend to have bigger street fairs, but this is a small town on an island so expect a much smaller venue. There were plenty of food vendors to pick from and while we are both meat eaters, one of our friends is not and there were plenty of vegan options. My fiancé visited “The Corn Project” booth where there were dressing ears of corn in all sorts of “toppings,” he got the Mexican option and it was amazing. There are two sections here for bands to setup. One section I was told is geared towards more local music, when I say local I mean Hawaiian. This ended up being our favorite area as there were multiple hula groups who were performing around the stage. The stage towards the back of the festival had a more mainstream pop cover band, which was also very good. In the area of the second band one will find multiple food trucks, everything from Thai, Mexican to bbq, there were plenty of food options to pick from. There are also a lot of local artisans selling their items. I bought a pineapple lime hot sauce from Hana Farms. Since I’ve been home I’ve put this sauce on tons of stuff. It goes really well on a burger, with a pineapple on a sweet Hawaiian bun. Definitely can’t wait till we’re back on the island next year to visit this little street fair.

This was a beautiful garden on the road into Iao Valley. Unfortunately it closed about two years ago.

Even if you are not into churches, this one is well worth a look for its architecture. So glad we had time to visit.

Not a busy place, nor a popular attraction, but I like to pause for simple time out here. Seems always worth it, but can be very windy.
