What travelers are saying
- Bob J16 contributionsWe were fortune to visit during a special weekend tribute to a local battle.
There were several volunteer reenactors who definitely know the history of the area and were happy to answer our questions.
The buildings are set up and accessible as well, and several paid staffers man various buildings. The forge was fun to visit and learn at.
The German home was staffed by a guy who was super knowledgeable and told great stories. When I asked why there were wooden shoes in a 1650 German home, he took us on a delightful 10 minute history lesson back to charlemaine!
Definitely fun and informative day.
Suggestion, rent a golf cart to get around if you have mobility issued, they seemed real helpful to many users.Written September 9, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - William BLynchburg, VA1,293 contributionsI have wanted to come here for years. My school teaching wife has brought her students here at least ten times, but you might say COVID did this field trip in, and she has not returned for several years. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] (again) brought me here, and it was 15-sta rating, five for each of the brilliant actresses. I do plan on returning.Written July 6, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jennifer A134 contributionsThis is a lovely museum tucked into a historic neighborhood in Staunton. Parking was very easy on the weekend - nice lot and also free street parking! The ticket shop and gift shop are located in a house next to the parking lot - great selection of both Woodrow Wilson historical books, early 1900s (suffrage, WW1) items and Virginia themed knick knacks. Very good shopping!
The museum itself is wonderful and includes all the presidential history stuff. Do not miss the WW 1 trench exhibit in the basement! Wilson’s birthplace home is a couple houses down the street, accessible via the garden path behind that connects the parking-gift shop-presidential library/museum-birthplace campus. The home has been restored and offers good interpretation of life in Virginia shortly before the civil war including frank discussion of the enslaved people who lived there. The house can only be seen on guided tour that takes about 45 minutes - schedule your tour time when you buy tickets at the gift shop!

- Karen C4 contributionsStaunton is a vibrant/active arts community as fascinating architecture! Bring your walking shoes so you can take in the downtown, stroll along Beverly Street which is closed to weekend traffic so restaurants can put out tables for diners to enjoy eating outside. Be sure to see a play at The Blackfriar Theater, catch a glass blowing demo at Sunspots, take in the Wharf area, Gypsy Hill Park, Mary Baldwin College, brew/wine/cider houses + Trinity Episcopal's historic courtyard & Tiffany windows. Festivals abound & our favorite is the Staunton Music Festival (rethink classical) that last 2 weeks in August and has a miniBaroque Festival in April!Written August 31, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DannyWassermanVirginia Beach, VA4,584 contributionsWell, where to start!!! This was an amazing excursion of 3 hours that takes you through the Blue Ridge Mts. of VA. We had a nice long ride thru various cities, had a narrator explain our journey, and we were treated to drinks, coffee, or tea. You also get a meal of your choice, chicken or salmon, vegetables, and a salad. They even give you a nice piece of chocolate cake for dessert. Definitely check out this train ride if you are in the area. Its worth every penny!!Written April 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - recycledmonkeySarnia, Canada17 contributionsFor first time riders, this was ideal. Carl was very good and the horses were calm and easy to ride. The ride was at a very slow pace and about an hour long. It went over some hills and through a steam.Written April 17, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Jack LOrne, France196 contributionsWe had a full day to spend in Staunton, so we started round the corner from our hotel, at the R.R. Smith Centre. During our visit there was a display of fine colonial period silverware—both American and British. There was also a display of 17th and 18th century maps of French wine-growing regions, as well as notes from Thomas Jefferson’s tour of those regions in 1787. Both were fascinating. In the other gallery there was a marvellous display of artisanry from around the region: woodwork, pottery, painting, photography, weaving and more. The exhibition was competitively decided by a panel of judges. We very much enjoyed what we saw—and even lightened our wallets with a couple of purchases. As exhibitions regularly change, we’ll certainly stop in again when we are next here.Written December 29, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
