Dodana Manor is closed for the winter but did you know that during this time, you can arrange a private tour with a Docent at a price close to the normal admission price by calling or sending an e-mail. The Docents are guides with an encyclopedic knowledge of George C. Marshall and those around him.

My wife and I spent a little over 75 minutes, starting wiht an excellent video then touring the residence, and each room was a piece of American history. Our Docent showed us everything including photos and answered all of out questions. Overall this is an experience that was worth the time to drive to Leesburg!

Wonderful Mothers Day celebration Saturday with my daughter at Stone Tower Winery. The weather was perfect! Balmy with a slight cooling breeze and a panoramic view of the vineyards, lake and rolling hills set the tone for lunch. We had a unique white sauce pizza - (Fantastic) Farmer's Market: spring peas, swiss chard, ricotta, lemon zest with a drizzle of honey - and delicious charcuterie board and sipped a unique wine Sycolin Creek (crisp white with a bit of oak & sweet finish).

She'd arranged an Uber trip to another favorite winery of hers - 50 West Vineyards - where we finished the afternoon watching the clouds roll in over the mountains & sipped their Brut Rose by a fire pit table. We had wine tastings at both wineries presented by personable, patient sommeliers. We laughed and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our patient husbands provided safe transport.

My husband and I visited this place for our 25th anniversary. Morven Park was as gorgeous as it was 25 years ago when we first saw this spot and fell in love with it. We got married here 25 years ago. In a very intimate setting, with a few family members, we were to elope to his place for a hideaway wedding which was crashed by my mother and father, sister and cousins. Somehow all of them found out our wedding plans. At this endearing park, we said our vows under the red Crepe Myrtle trees... Morven Park was not yet discovered as a wedding venue back then.

The mall is perfect for our current times. Open spaces, fresh air and lots of great stores to choose from. A notable store is the Williams Sonoma outlet, friendly service and good selection of merchandise.

We were here in a Monday so we couldn’t view the inside of any buildings but we wandered the grounds as if we lived there. No one was anywhere around and it was quiet and peaceful. We do a lot of gardening/landscaping and so enjoyed the terraced areas, the little paths, large pots of flowers and plants, different textures and colors of plants juxtaposed in such pleasing ways and the little chairs tucked away near pretty flowers. I would love to visit in Spring or earlier summer but it was still a relaxing and pleasant way to spend an hour or so

My dear friend and I started our mini-retreat by meeting for lunch with flights at Lost Creek, it was the best start for the weekend! There was a light drizzle over the beaucolic landscape as we turned into an unobtrusive long driveway..an inviting outdoor patio led us from the parking area we to a large cabin space with tables for seating. We did not make a reservation, but nevertheless were seated shortly after we arrived

The customer service was welcoming, friendly and knowledgeble. We enjoyed four flights of wine with four dishes, beautifully paired by the chef. The pace was leisurely, each dish and paired wine was delicious!

This is a must-go for foodies and wine connoisseurs! I am looking forward to returning when it's not raining outside!!

Very nice both outside and inside. Tastings are themed with a new theme each month. Tastings come with snack pairing for each wine.

Short version: Casanel, a small family owned winery, simply put our favorite winery bar none. Notable for their Cabernet Sauvignon (hard to grow in Virginia) and their Petit Verdots, all of their wines every year have been good to great. Service is good, pricing is fair and reasonable considering the market, and the atmosphere is welcoming and warm. They do allow dogs and food outside, but do enforce a no dog and no outside policy indoors, in part to ensure that there always is a place that is quieter for those who seek it.

Long version: My wife and I judge wineries on three scales - quality of the wine, quality of the service, and other (which includes the views, value for price, food options, etc).

Wine Quality - Casanel wine has been consistently good to great in spite of difficult years. Although they have had a change in wine makers, the samples we have tasted of the product that their new wine maker Adam has produced, I believe, will continue their reputation for quality. While many of these produced by Adam are not yet available for sale, they also have a strong library of wines that are well worth checking out and, we believe, value for money. That said, our pallet tends to lean toward the dry reds (PV, Cab Sauv, and others), but they also produce a Chardonnay that has gone through malolactic fermentation and lightly oaked, producing a flavorful wine that is not a butter bomb. They also produce a few other whites and reds that are also worth a visit, including Norton (both still and as a bubbly), a Carmenere (an all but lost burgundy grape), and Pinot Gris in several styles. In the warmer months, they also have several roses including last year an orange wine (based on a white wine made like a red). And that is about half of their offerings. If I had to say that they had a weakness in this category, it would be that they don’t have that much to offer sweet wine drinkers, but they do have an option or two.

Service - The Casanel winery team does all they can to create a warm, welcoming environment to their guests and, being that we are frequent visitors, they have become our winery home away from home. Notable is Theresa, the operations manager who with her team handles the front of the house. Victoria does a great job keeping interesting events going on. Nelson, the owner, is a character with great passion for the US - while you may not always agree with his views, you certainly will never question his love of what his hard work and the opportunities of this nation have granted him. Elliotte does a thousand jobs including helping with communications and the website. And one cannot go on without mentioning Anna - the general manager who quite literally is the glue that keeps everything going. Hers is a thankless job of putting out fires, dealing with difficult customers, and ensuring that her team (mentioned or not) have the resources to have all run smoothly. If Casanel had a weakness in this area, it would be that this is not a place for loud drunken parties nor a place for children and animals to run unrestrained or without supervision - but to us, that is a strength and not a weakness.

Other - As noted above, this is a catchall category for us. Casanel’s main tasting room was hand built by its owner, and the secondary tasting room is a historical structure. Both are lovely as are the grounds. While the wine is a bit pricey, the quality is there and therefore in our books represents a good value. Further, there are a number of efforts that occur behind the scenes that also contribute to the experience. Be it from the vineyard crew who manage to keep the vines healthy and attractive in spite of weather and pests thus allowing quality fruit to be had to the production staff ensuring that quality never fails, there is significant effort that goes into the bottle before it is labeled.

In closing, when one considers the consistent quality and superior customer service this small winery provides, it certainly should be on your list of wineries to check out.

We were in Leesburg for a conference but took some time to visit the charming town. Even though the buildings were old they were, for the most part well kept and gave you the sense of having been transported to an earlier era.

Our private tour with Carla was tremendous and should be experienced by all. It was an easy walking tour that lasted 1 hour and 20 minutes. Carla walks you around Leesburg and shows you the beautiful architecture of the historic buildings, discusses the history, and even points out great places to eat in the area. You really get a special feel for Leesburg that is invaluable. Carla is so knowledgeable and quite charming. You will love her special tour and enjoy yourself thoroughly!
