- Jbinnacle69 contributionsIs it worth the daytrip from Madrid just for the castle? Doubtul if you don't care about bildings. Is in an interesting building? Yes, if you are into arquitecture. For the kind of people who actually enjoy castles - do visit! It's small but the restoration is pretty good, and age has been kind to most of the castle.Written September 28, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jordanellie41Bolton, UK938 contributionsThis palace may look ordinary from the outside but inside it is quite different. It is full of the finest and most oppulent antiques, furniture, carpets and lights with all of them being made from only the most exquisite of materials money can buy.Written June 30, 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Terry MHamilton, Canada4,307 contributionsThe Renaissance exterior of the complex speaks of the wealth and power of the city’s Toledo archbishops. The grounds take up the northwest corner of the historic core. Built in the 13th century, it has seen several noteworthy events, including the birth of Catherine of Aragon [1485] and the first meeting place of Christopher Columbus and the Catholic kings [1486]. Once reputedly one of the best Renaissance palaces in all of Europe, it went into decline when the capital of Spain was moved to Madrid in 1561. Much work had to be done after a catastrophic fire in 1939. There is some parking on site.Written October 21, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- rossella mLos Angeles, CA19 contributionsThis 15th century castle is worth the stop! These majestic walls built by the Arabs protect the castle, a church, and clock tower. There is also a museum displaying works by Pablo Picasso.Written March 5, 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Terry MHamilton, Canada4,307 contributionsOn a hill near the town lies the second castle on the site, this one dating from the late 16th century. A Renaissance work, its thick walls, moat and drawbridge give it the appearance of a fortress. Its sad history includes being looted and burned during the War of Spanish Succession and then sacked during the War of Independence. It presently is not in use and cannot be visited. It is worthwhile to trudge up the hill for a closer look and a look back at the town too.Written November 4, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
