Congratulations to the Scotland Historical Association for their care of such a treasure. They have included instructional posters that help in understanding the significance of the place.
From the car park high above the cairn all you can see is a building that looks a bit like a hangar and the ruins of a broch off to the right.

Rousay has so many antiquities but it's possble to "do" the main ones in a day, The Blackhammer Cairn is readily accessible from the roadside and is very large inside.
Stunning views.

With the cairn next door, many pass by the Broch but are missing a treat, fantastic piece of history of the island which is well preserved.
If you've hiked down from the parking are to see Midhowe Cairn, take the extra time to visit the broch (1st century or so defensive structure).
