- Leslie JAltamonte Springs, FL356 contributionsWe drove this route,14A from downtown Spearfish until the end not far from Deadwood. The signage was good and there was ample parking. It was a beautiful drive from the beginning. It was the only place in our 3 week national park road trip that we saw mountain goats.Written November 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - chemie71Pittsburgh, PA447 contributionsWe drove the Scenic Byway on our way to Spearfish. We made several stops along the way to see Roughlock, Spearfish and Bridal Veil Falls. If you're in the area, definitely take a day to enjoy the canyon and beautiful sites.Written October 21, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - sharrongegHenderson, NV3,889 contributionsMy cousin suggested we go for a walk and we ended up here. It was a fabulous idea on his part!
Free entry and free parking nearby. We saw a few docents around the hatchery ready to answer any questions. From tiny fry to 18” beefy rainbow and brown trout - all are available to view and feed. Fish food available to buy at small store in middle of the hatchery. They even have the original fish train car that was used to stock rivers and lakes in outlying areas.
An underground viewing area lets visitors see the trout at “their” level.

You can walk on the road or the little path through the grass alongside the road (north of the parking lot) to get to the bridge which you cross and then you’ll find the start of the trail. Once you start on the trail, you will get to the creek quickly, and then the whole trail is following the creek bed all the way to the devil’s bathtub. My husband and I loved this trail as there was lots of back-and-forth across the creek (yes, your shoes will be soaked) n rocks and logs. Make sure you wear hiking boots or runners, not sandals! I would rate this as a moderate hike just because you’re crossing the river and over rocks a lot.Written September 22, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - James MGuyton, GA652 contributionsWe finally scheduled our trip out West. The national parks and sites are stunning. One of our stops was at the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish, South Dakota. Our Colette tour guide set up a time for us to eat and go through the museum. There is plenty of parking with multiple handicap spaces. They also have ramps and elevators for use. The museum is set up to educate travelers on the cowboy era of the Old West. Upon entering, I immediately realized there were many exhibits to see in the museum. They divided it into different display areas based on topics from fashion, Native American, transport, etc. The first area I visited was the transportation display. There is a stagecoach, different types of buggies, and the covered wagons you see in movies. Looking inside the covered wagon, I think of how hard life was for the first settlers out West. They also have a hearse display with a coffin, cowboy hat, and boots. I can almost see the townspeople in their carriages, all dressed in fine Western attire. There are multiple weapons displays, saddle displays, and displays of tools used at the time. The museum taught me things I did not know but was also very interesting. Every staff member was welcoming and friendly. The staff was eager to share their knowledge and provide context for each subject or display. Visiting the museum was thought provoking, educational, and enjoyable. I am glad it was part of our tour. It is a great family attraction. I need to get back in the saddle and mosey on over to my next destination.Written July 2, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - The Frank FamilyGillette, WY58 contributionsWe came from Gillette and it was well worth the drive! Even on a “packed” day there were plenty of places to sit and rarely a line for the slides. We had a great day!Written June 29, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jerri LJohnston, IA5,156 contributionsVery nice local brewery within walking distance from where we were camped. We stopped for a beer and enjoyed our choices from the menu. It was consistently busy while we were there and is definitely a favorite place for the locals. - vmsolkoRockwell City, IA95 contributionsWe're so glad we stopped by the Visitor's Center before exploring Spearfish. Mistie was extremely helpful. She listened to what we wanted to do with our day (a picnic lunch with younger kids, multiple hikes, and the scenic byway) and have recommendations based on that. She was very knowledgeable, and I'm glad we stopped by to plan our day with the advice of a local.Written June 13, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
