We have stayed at an Air B&B pretty much across the street from the Karpeles several times and have never visited in spite of its being the most imposing building on the street.

This week’s chilly wet weather called for indoor activities and the library made its way to the top of our list.

The inside of the building is in considerably better repair than the outside and it’s a worthy home for the very interesting documents currently on exhibit. I should point out that exhibits change every four months and they follow a theme. We saw documents following the invention of the telegraph machine through the construction of a line between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. Included were correspondence between Samuel Morse and various government entities dealing with patents, plans and contracts. Very interesting and all written in longhand. A concurrent permanent exhibit was a series of large format photos showing the construction of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River, a significant engineering feat.

We were happy to learn that when we return mid-May, 2018, there will be a completely new exhibit on display. We will definitely return.

A great place for a quick snoop... although you have to navigate a steep flight of steps from street level!
This is one of Charleston's grandest surviving buildings - a private library/club which is members-only, but which you're at liberty to push open the door, spend a few minutes admiring the interior, take a leaflet, look at the wonderful old bookshelves at the back, then go on your way again.
It's pure history, and the folk inside are very enthusiastic about it.
Well worth a brief look, before you're told that it's strictly membership and that, sadly, it's not possible to come in and spend the day browsing!

There are many branches to the library so it is nice to have one close to us. Unfortunately, I have searched the catalog for many things the library doesn't have.

The Marlene & Nathan Addlestone Library - College of Charleston is a wonderful resource to get some work done in a quiet environment with an overwhelming amount of sources for research along with very cool collections on display to check out and learn. Awesome environment to study and learn.
