The Audubon Swamp Garden is a 60-acre cypress and tupelo swamp on the grounds of Magnolia Plantation on Ashley River Road near Charleston, South Carolina. Named after famed artist, naturalist and ornithologist John James Audubon, who visited the plantation before the Civil War and is said to have collected waterfowl specimens as models for his paintings, it is located on the exit road on the left before leaving the property onto Ashley River Road. It is a unique world onto itself, a place where trees grow from the water, islands float and everywhere wild animals go about their secret lives. At one time, the swamp served as a reservoir for the plantation's rice cultivation. Today, it boasts a diversity of living things almost unequaled anywhere else in the United States with thousands of plant and animal species coexisting amongst the cypress and tupelo gum trees, surrounded by blackwater. Each year, hundreds of egrets, herons, ibis and other waterfowl nest within feet of the walking path. Other wildlife include alligators, turtles and otters. Open daily, visitors can explore this one-of-a-kind swamp garden and otherwise inaccessible landscape on boardwalks, bridges and dikes. Take your time and be alert for the alligators.

There is free parking on site, with a few signs. There are some earthwork remains. Aside from that there isn't much here, so unless you are a huge Civil War buff it isn't the site for you.

My 21 year old daughter and I had such a great visit . She is an animal lover (especially bunnies!) and just assumed we were going to a little petting zoo . It’s interactive as well as educational , and she LOVED it ! (So did I) . Highly recommend if you love animals to families with children , or just even the adults .
